Castello Vicchiomaggio
A castle with a tower from around 1100 and one of Chianti's most open cellar doors. Daily tastings at the Cantinetta San Jacopo, guided tours from 33 euros, and a restaurant and rooms inside the walls. The Matta family has made the wines here since 1964. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot fill the Chianti Classico range, and Amphiarao ages in terracotta jars from Impruneta.

Pomino has been on Tuscany's fine-wine list since Cosimo III named it in 1716. At Frescobaldi's high, forest-ringed castle estate the wines turn white and sparkling, and you can taste, lunch, or stay the night in one of five castle rooms.

Malenchini Wine Estate
The Malenchini family has owned the Villa Medicea di Lilliano since 1830 and farms 18 hectares of organic vines and 12,000 olive trees around it. Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Superiore and a pure Canaiolo, with five bookable tours and tastings, one of them a vineyard picnic, and villas to stay in.

Sassotondo
In the volcanic hills between Pitigliano and Sovana, where the soft tufo rock makes the vineyards, the houses and the cellars. Carla Benini and Edoardo Ventimiglia left Rome for a ruined farm here in 1990 and made their first wine in 1997. Certified organic since 1994, biodynamic since 2007, and known above all for Ciliegiolo.

Giuseppe Sesti, a historian of astronomy, bought the ruined Castello di Argiano in 1975 and planted Brunello vines in 1990. Thirteen hectares of vines, large Slavonian casks, and a Riserva named Phenomena with a new astronomical label each release.

Tenuta Sette Ponti
Between Florence and Arezzo, on the old road of seven bridges. The Moretti Cuseri family has farmed here since the 1950s and bottled its first wine in 1998. The vineyards are organic, and the oldest of them was planted in 1935 by a prince of the House of Savoy. Visits run Monday to Saturday and most start in the vines.

Ridolfi
Ridolfi farms the cool north-east side of the Montalcino hill at Mercatali, and the farming is certified organic. Gianni Maccari, who spent fourteen years at Poggio di Sotto before this, makes the wine. Gambero Rosso gave it its Emerging Winery award in the 2021 guide.

Il Valentiano
Il Valentiano is a small Ciacci-family estate in south-western Montalcino, farming Sangiovese at 400 metres among olive groves and macchia. Its flagship Campaperi Brunello di Montalcino is a limited, barrique-aged Sangiovese Grosso of around 400 cases a vintage, backed by a Riserva and a Rosso di Montalcino. Visits run by appointment, in Italian or English.

Tenuta San Guido
Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon here in the 1940s and kept the wine private until the 1968 vintage went on sale. That wine, Sassicaia, now holds a DOC of its own, reserved to this single 2,500-hectare estate behind Bolgheri's cypress avenue. Guidalberto and Le Difese complete the range, and there is no public cellar door.

Castello di Radda
On the hill facing the village of Radda in Chianti, in one of the coolest, stoniest corners of Chianti Classico. The vineyards run from 350 to 450 metres in Radda and Gaiole, all of them certified organic since 2020, and the cellar is dug out of the rock so that almost nothing shows above ground. Seven visits can be booked, and the cellar shop is open six days a week.

Stefano Amerighi began his Rhone-selected Syrah project on two hills at Poggiobello di Farneta in 2001. Demeter-certified farming, foot-trodden grapes, concrete vats and no additions; Apice, his top wine, waits two and a half years in bottle.

A medieval castle on a ridge south-west of Florence, in Guicciardini hands since at least 1199. 140 hectares of vines and 12,000 olive trees make Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Vin Santo and a Laudemio oil. Tours and tastings by appointment.

Tenuta Montauto
Inland from the Maremma coast near Manciano, about ten kilometres from the sea and 200 metres up, on clay full of quartz. The same family has farmed here for over sixty years; Riccardo Lepri made it a wine estate in 2001. Sea breeze and cold nights make it white-wine country, and one Italian guide called its Sauvignon the best in the country in 2024.

Castello di Monterinaldi
On a hill at Lucarelli in the parish of Radda in Chianti, named after a Lombard count who held it in 1010. Vines were only planted in 1961, seventeen separate parcels of them, and the estate has been certified organic since 2018 and Equalitas certified since 2023. Ten visits can be booked, from a fifteen-euro tasting to lunch in the painted rooms of Villa Pesanella.
