Ridolfi sits at Mercatali, on the cool north-east side of the Montalcino hill in Tuscany. The Ridolfi were a Florentine family from 1290, and their coat of arms is still on the label. Giuseppe Peretti bought the estate in 2011 and rebuilt the cellar in 2014. Gianni Maccari has run it ever since. The vines here are all Sangiovese and all farmed organically, from Rosso di Montalcino up to Brunello. Three tours with tastings can be booked online.
Book a visitGianni Maccari has made the wine at Ridolfi since 2014. He spent fourteen years before that at Poggio di Sotto, working next to Giulio Gambelli, the master taster of Sangiovese. The estate changed hands in 2011, when Giuseppe Peretti bought it. Maccari arrived three years later. In its 2021 guide Gambero Rosso handed Ridolfi its Emerging Winery award and gave the 2015 Brunello three glasses, its top mark.
The land is called Mercatali, and it earned the name. A big annual market stood here in the fifth and sixth centuries. One of the farmhouses still has a three-storey block of stone and tuff from that time. The vines face north-east, 300 metres up the Montalcino hill, just off the Strada del Brunello. This is the cool side of the hill, so the fruit ripens slowly and the wines keep their freshness. The soil is clay with old sea fossils in it, and turns to limestone higher up.
About nineteen football pitches of vines are given to Brunello, four more to Rosso di Montalcino, and there are more than 700 olive trees for the estate oil. Every vine on the hill is Sangiovese. The farming is certified organic. Nothing synthetic is sprayed, moths are put off the scent instead of killed, and cover crops are ploughed back in to feed the soil. Solar panels cover most of the power the winery uses.
Picking is by hand into small crates. The fruit is sorted twice, once in the rows and again in the cellar. The berries then go into the tanks uncrushed and ferment with only the yeasts that come in on the skins. The temperature never passes 27 degrees. Skins sit in the wine for 30 to 60 days, which is a long time. After that the wine is moved as little as possible. DOCG rules ask for two years in oak, and Ridolfi gives its Brunello three, plus another year in bottle.
Visitors are welcome, and every visit is booked in advance. Three tours run from the cellar door. The shortest is an hour with three wines. The longest runs two and a half hours, with wine drawn straight from the barrel and a line of older Brunello to taste. Lunch at the winery can be arranged for small groups on request. The Rosso, the Brunello, the Riserva and the Donna Rebecca selection are all sold in the UK.
