Argiolas
Argiolas is Sardinia's best-known wine family, based in Serdiana, twenty kilometres inland from Cagliari. Antonio Argiolas founded the winery in 1938, and his grandchildren lead it today. The house built its name on the island's own grapes: Cannonau, Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Vermentino. Its flagship red is Turriga, a Cannonau-led blend created in the late 1980s with Giacomo Tachis. The range runs from the everyday Costamolino to Antonio 100, named for the founder's hundred years.

About Argiolas
Antonio Argiolas began bottling under his own name in 1938, decades before Sardinia had a modern wine industry to speak of. His sons Franco and Giuseppe grew the estate through the second half of the twentieth century. A third generation, Valentina, Francesca and Antonio, runs the daily operation now. The founder himself lived past one hundred. His life spans almost the entire story of bottled Sardinian wine.
There is no single home vineyard. The family works a network of estates across the southern half of the island. Bingias Beccias, around Selegas, gives white grapes from forty hectares of older vines, about 56 football pitches. The Trexenta hills between Selegas and Guamaggiore sit at three hundred metres and give the reds their cooler edge. Su Pranu and Iselis, at Sibiola beside a brackish lagoon, hold an experimental vineyard that keeps eleven recovered native grape varieties alive. And at Is Solinas in Sulcis, Carignano grows in sand, salt air and juniper.
Turriga changed the estate's course. The wine was designed in the 1980s with Giacomo Tachis, the consultant who shaped Sassicaia and Solaia for Tenuta San Guido and Antinori. It leads with Cannonau, backed by small shares of Bovale Sardo, Carignano and Malvasia Nera. The blend ages in French oak barriques for eighteen to twenty-four months, then rests twelve to fourteen months in bottle. The first vintage was 1988, released in 1991. Mariano Murru, who worked as Tachis's apprentice on the project, is technical director today.
The farming has tightened across every estate. Each vine's position is logged, and every estate has its own weather station. Cover crops grow between the vines, and pest control is biological. Over the last decade the team has also adopted the gentle pruning method of Simonit and Sirch on all its estates. At the centre of the effort sits the Sibiola field, a living catalogue of five thousand plants from those eleven recovered varieties.
The range starts with the easy-going Costamolino and S'elegas Vermentino. Costera Cannonau and Perdera Monica sit in the middle. At the top come Turriga, Korem and Antonio 100, the wine that marks the founder's century. Two Argiolas wines are currently featured on italianwines.co.uk: Costamolino, and the single-vineyard Meri. Both are Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, and both carry the sun and wind of the Trexenta hills.
