Cantine San Marzano

A co-operative in the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria zone, between Salento's two coasts. Nineteen growers started it in 1962, and the first bottling line arrived in 1996. Its Sessantanni, from bush-vines over sixty years old, put Puglian red wine on the world map.

Tagaro

Tagaro is a family-run Apulian estate at Fasano, farming around forty hectares across the Itria Valley, the Salento and the Murgia. Mancinello Nero di Troia, Cinquenoci Primitivo, Sei Caselle Negroamaro and the Pinataro line sit under Puglia IGT. Muso Rosso and the flagship Gravità Riserva carry Primitivo di Manduria DOC.

The Dibenedetto family's estate on the Castellaneta plateau in Puglia. Francesco Valentino farms by synergistic agriculture, the no-tillage method drawn from Masanobu Fukuoka, and bottles native grapes as Salento IGT and Puglia IGT. A Triple A producer since 2016, with low-sulphur reds led by Primitivo Mistico and the orange Verdeca Sette Lune.

The Antinori family's Puglia estate, begun in 1998. Vines on the Adriatic coast at San Pietro Vernotico, an organically farmed property under the Castel del Monte hills, and Primitivo near Manduria. Calafuria, Torcicoda and Bocca di Lupo are the wines British merchants stock. Cellar tours and tastings at Bocca di Lupo, booked online.

Salento winery based in Leporano, just south of Taranto. Its flagship is Collezione 53, an old-vine Primitivo di Manduria, backed by Negroamaro, Verdeca and Malvasia bianca lines.
