Strada dei Vini DOC Castel del Monte Two days on the Murgia from Terlizzi to Trani, following the wine road's own town itineraries: the cathedral towns of Ruvo and Corato, Frederick II's octagon, Minervino's ridge and Tormaresca's Bocca di Lupo, Andria's burrata dairies and Rivera, then Moscato di Trani at the harbour. 115 kilometres, Nero di Troia all the way.

Why this drive: Castel del Monte is the one Italian wine zone named for a building, and the building is worth the trip on its own: Frederick II's octagonal castle stands on its hill in the Alta Murgia with nothing else on the skyline. Around it grows Nero di Troia, a late red the rest of Italy barely knows, picked from the middle of October, weeks after the Primitivo further south, and made into two DOCG Riservas that must age two years, one of them in wood. The association's itineraries string together three Romanesque cathedral towns, the castle, Minervino's ridge, Andria's burrata dairies and the Moscato harbour at Trani, and the whole thing is 115 kilometres of open road.

Stop 1 · The start, by the airport

Terlizzi

ZTL city, see the driving notes

The flower town at the Bari end of the road: a neoclassical cathedral, a 31 metre clock tower, and vines in the lower Murgia that fall inside the DOC zone.

What to taste here

  • Castel del MonteDOC The DOC covers Terlizzi's slice of the lower Murgia; start with a Rosso to set the scale
  • Castel del Monte Bombino NeroDOCG The rose DOCG, made from Bombino Nero, and Puglia's serious pink

Twenty five kilometres and about half an hour from Bari airport. Walk the centre before 20:00, when the evening restricted zone switches on; the museum of folk traditions and the chapel of Santa Maria di Cesano outside the town are the association's own picks.

2

Stop 2 · Cathedral, museum and the cooperative

Ruvo di Puglia

ZTL city, see the driving notes

The Romanesque cathedral, the Jatta museum with the Talos vase, and Crifo, the land-reform cooperative that is the road's member cellar here.

What to taste here

  • Castel del MonteDOC Crifo, the land-reform cooperative, is the member cellar; its range is the cheapest way through the DOC
  • Nero di Troia The grape of the whole road, late, tannic and scented; ask for it unblended

The whole old centre inside Corso Carafa, Corso Cavour, via Griffi, Corso Jatta and Corso Gramsci is a 24 hour restricted zone with five camera gates, so park on those boulevards and walk in. U.P.E.P.I.D.D.E. has been in the borgo antico since 1990; it closes on Monday.

Where to eat

Orecchiette con brasciole, 18 euro; the food tasting menu is 60 euro

U.P.E.P.I.D.D.E.. Vico Sant'Agnese 2, in the borgo antico since 1990; Tuesday to Saturday lunch and dinner, Sunday lunch, closed Monday

3

Stop 3 · The road's home town

Corato

ZTL city, see the driving notes

Seat of the wine road since 1999 and home of the Coratina olive; Torrevento's cellar is in an 18th century stone monastery on the SP234 at km 10.6, on the way up to the castle.

What to taste here

  • Castel del Monte Nero di Troia RiservaDOCG Two years' ageing from 1 November of the harvest, at least one in wood, and 13 per cent minimum; Torrevento and Carpentiere both make one
  • Castel del Monte Rosso RiservaDOCG The blended Riserva, Nero di Troia led, from the same hills
  • Coratina olive oil The bitter, peppery cultivar named for the town; buy it where you taste the wine

The centre inside via Mazzini, Corso Cavour, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Corso Garibaldi and Largo Plebiscito is restricted on weekday evenings and holiday mornings; park outside it. Torrevento, founded in 1950 by the Liantonio brothers, runs tastings and guided walks in vineyard and cellar, and Cantine Carpentiere is 4.6 kilometres from the castle.

Where to eat

Orecchiette with cime di rapa, 11 euro, and bombette off the grill, 14 euro

La Locanda Du Baron. Vico I Lops 2, in the old centre; open every day, recipes handed down in the family; book on 392 695 2112

4

Stop 4 · The octagon that names the wine

Castel del Monte

Frederick II's octagon on its hill in the Alta Murgia park, the monument that names the DOC and three DOCGs; open every day 9:00 to 17:45, 10 euro, free on the first Sunday of the month.

What to taste here

  • Castel del MonteDOC Cantine Carpentiere's vines are on the hills around the castle, 4.6 kilometres from the gate
  • Castel del Monte Rosso RiservaDOCG The bottle to open back at the hotel after the climb

Cars stop at the car park on the SS170 dir/A, 5 euro; the shuttle to the gate is 2 euro return, or walk the last few hundred metres. The ticket office shuts at 17:00. Cantine Carpentiere's vines are on the hills around the castle, 4.6 kilometres away.

Day 2 · Minervino, Andria and the sea at Trani
5

Stop 5 · The ridge and Bocca di Lupo

Minervino Murge

The western edge of the Murgia: the Scesciola quarter at the top of the old town, Piazza Gramsci's view to Monte Vulture, and Tormaresca's Bocca di Lupo estate at 250 metres, nine kilometres out.

What to taste here

  • Castel del MonteDOC Minervino is the only comune entirely inside the zone; Bocca di Lupo sits at 250 metres on its slope
  • Aglianico Tormaresca's Bocca di Lupo is an Aglianico, not a Nero di Troia; Monte Vulture, the grape's volcano, is the view from Piazza Gramsci

Tormaresca's other estates are closed to visitors; Bocca di Lupo takes guided visits and tastings booked through tenutaboccadilupo.it. Casa Scesciola cooks the Alta Murgia at Vico III via Vescovado 22, Tuesday to Saturday lunch and dinner, Sunday lunch. The Sagra del Fungo Cardoncello fills Piazza Bovio on the last weekend of October.

Where to eat

The Alta Murgia's old flavours from zero-kilometre produce

Casa Scesciola. Vico III via Vescovado 22, in the Scesciola quarter; Tuesday to Saturday 12:30 to 15:00 and 20:30 to 22:00, Sunday lunch, closed Monday; book a table through the site

Stop 6 · Burrata and Rivera

Andria

ZTL city, see the driving notes

Frederick's fidelis city, with two of his wives in the cathedral crypt; Burrata di Andria IGP since 2016, and Rivera's cellar on the SP231 at km 60.5.

What to taste here

  • Castel del Monte Rosso RiservaDOCG Il Falcone is Rivera's Rosso Riserva DOCG, from a family cellar here since the 1950s
  • Castel del Monte Nero di Troia RiservaDOCG Puer Apuliae, Rivera's varietal Riserva, is picked at the end of October
  • Moscato di TraniDOC Andria's dairies pair it with almond pastry; the DOC starts on the coast below

The old centre inside Piazza Porta La Barra, via Orsini, Piazza Settimo and via Jannuzzi is restricted from 20:30 to 05:00 every night, so an evening arrival parks outside the ring. Rivera sells guided tours and tastings through esperienze.rivera.it; Conte Spagnoletti Zeuli and Tenuta Cocevola are the other member cellars around the town.

Where to eat

Burrata di Andria IGP, made on the premises

Caseificio Olanda. Via Santa Maria dei Miracoli 150, a dairy making burrata in Andria since 1988; the IGP dates from 2016

7

Stop 7 · The end, at the harbour

Trani

ZTL city, see the driving notes

The cathedral on the water, the Swabian castle and the harbour: Moscato di Trani DOC, the sweet wine from dried Moscato grapes, is the last glass of the road.

What to taste here

  • Moscato di TraniDOC Sweet Moscato from dried grapes, the town's own DOC; drink it with the almond tarts the association pairs it with
  • Castel del MonteDOC Part of Trani's territory is in the DOC too, on the coastal plain seven metres above the sea

Park at Piazza Castello, 130 spaces at 0.80 euro an hour beside the cathedral; the old town lanes behind it are closed to cars from 11:00 until 08:00 the next morning, and the port road from 20:00 on summer evenings. Raw fish from the market, in a 12th century church; tasting menus from 100 euro

Le Lampare al Fortino. Via Tiepolo on the Sant'Antonio mole: the church of Sant'Antuono, built in the 12th century and swallowed by the 1541 fort; closed Tuesdays unless a holiday

Before you ask

Strada dei Vini DOC Castel del Monte, answered

Both. The castle is Frederick II's octagon of about 1240 on its hill south of Andria, a UNESCO site since 1996. The wine zone around it took the name as a DOC in 1971, and in 2011 three styles were promoted to DOCG: Bombino Nero rose, Nero di Troia Riserva and Rosso Riserva. The Strada dei Vini DOC Castel del Monte is the association, founded in 1999 and based at Corso Cavour 27 in Corato, whose itineraries this page follows.

115 kilometres and about three hours of driving, split as 35 kilometres on day one (Terlizzi, Ruvo, Corato, the castle) and 80 on day two (Minervino, Andria, Trani). The castle needs 90 minutes with the shuttle. Two cellar visits a day is the sensible limit.

Torrevento describes itself as an open estate with tastings and guided walks, on the SP234 at km 10.6. Rivera sells guided tours and tastings through esperienze.rivera.it. Tormaresca's Bocca di Lupo at Minervino takes visits booked through tenutaboccadilupo.it and is the group's only estate open to the public. Crifo in Ruvo is a cooperative cellar. In October, when the harvest is on, book the day before.

Ruvo's old centre is closed to cars 24 hours a day behind camera gates; park on Corso Jatta or Corso Cavour. Andria's centre closes from 20:30 to 05:00, Corato's and Terlizzi's on weekday evenings from 20:00 and holiday mornings. In Trani use Piazza Castello, 130 spaces by the cathedral at 0.80 euro an hour; the lanes behind it are car-free from 11:00 to 08:00 and the port road from 20:00 in summer. At the castle, cars stop at the SS170 dir/A car park, 5 euro, and the shuttle to the gate is 2 euro return.

The second half of October: Nero di Troia comes in from mid month, Rivera picks its Puer Apuliae at the end of it, and Minervino's Sagra del Fungo Cardoncello takes the last weekend (26 and 27 October in 2024). The castle opens every day of the year, 9:00 to 17:45, and is free on the first Sunday of the month. Avoid July and August on the plateau unless you start at 8.

The Murgia's own red grape, usually said to be named for Troia, the town near Foggia: late to ripen, deep in colour and firm in tannin. It goes into the Castel del Monte Rosso and, alone, into the Nero di Troia Riserva DOCG, which must age two years from 1 November of the harvest, at least one of them in wood, and reach 13 per cent.

Because the association does not go there. Bisceglie is outside the Castel del Monte zone and is not a member; Gravina in Puglia is 50 kilometres south with its own white-wine DOC, Gravina. The nine comuni of the wine road are Palo del Colle, Toritto, Bitonto, Terlizzi, Ruvo di Puglia, Corato, Trani, Andria and Minervino Murge, and this page follows the association's published town itineraries, which cover the last six.

A sweet DOC from Moscato grapes grown on the coastal strip around Trani and left to dry before pressing, golden and honeyed; a fortified liquoroso version exists too. The association pairs it with almond tarts, and several of the road's member cellars make one.
