Planeta is one of Sicily's most influential wine families. Farm records place the family on the island from 1694. The modern wine project began in 1995 at the Ulmo estate near Menfi. Today the seventeenth generation farms five wine territories. They run from Menfi on the Belice coast to Vittoria, Noto, the slopes of Mount Etna and Capo Milazzo. All the vineyards, olive groves and arable land have been certified organic since 2022. Every estate offers hospitality, including the resort and restaurant at La Foresteria di Menfi. The cellars themselves are the entry point to Sicilian wine.
The Planeta family entered the Menfi land record in 1694. That year an old stone farmhouse on the Belice plain came into the family by marriage. Seventeen generations of farming followed: cereals, olives, almonds and pasture. Wine came late. In the mid 1980s Diego Planeta persuaded his nieces and nephews to plant something new. Alessio, Francesca and Santi planted Chardonnay and other unfamiliar grapes at Ulmo, next to a fortress from the Saracen era. The first commercial winery opened at Ulmo in 1995. A year later Luigi Veronelli praised the first vintage of Planeta Chardonnay.
Thirty years on, one idea runs the company: every territory gets its own winery. That means six cellars across five wine zones. Ulmo and Dispensa at Menfi make the Sicilia DOC and Menfi DOC whites, including Cometa, the first Fiano produced in Sicily. Dorilli at Vittoria makes Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG and Frappato. Buonivini at Noto, bought in 1998, is home to Santa Cecilia, the family's flagship Nero d'Avola. Sciaranuova, on the north slope of Mount Etna, makes Etna Bianco and Etna Rosso from two contrade, Taccione and Feudo di Mezzo. The same estate grows the Eruzione 1614 range at altitude. Capparrina, above Capo Milazzo, makes Mamertino DOC.
The catalogue runs to roughly thirty wines. Cometa, La Segreta, the cru Etnas and Santa Cecilia are the most exported bottles. Beside them sit the prestige wines Burdese, Didacus and the long-aged Allemanda. Serra Ferdinandea, near Sambuca di Sicilia, is a separate biodynamic project run jointly with the Oddo family from France. It produces three Sicilia DOC wines: a white, a rosé and a red.
Sustainability sits at the centre of the business. Planeta has held the SOStain Sicilia certificate for sustainable viticulture since 2010. Organic conversion of all six estates was completed between 2020 and 2021. Since 2022 all the cultivated land has been certified organic: vineyards, olive groves, almond groves and cereals. The olive oils are bottled as DOP Val di Mazara and IGP Sicilia. In 2023 the Wine Star Awards named Alessio Planeta Wine Maker of the Year. In 2024 the Meininger Awards named the family Wine Family of the Year.
All five wine territories offer hospitality on site. La Foresteria di Menfi, opened in 2009, is a country resort with a restaurant, gardens and the Insula Beach Club on the coast below. The recently opened La Segreta Country House sits on the same Ulmo estate. Palazzo Planeta in Palermo offers an apartment hotel, and the residence at Sambuca di Sicilia hosts artists. Tasting tours at Ulmo, Sciaranuova and Buonivini pair vineyard walks and cellar visits with Sicilian food and Planeta olive oil. Sciaranuova also offers a vertical tasting of the Etna Crus.

Planeta's current bottle selection is led by Sicilia DOC. The clearest grape signal comes from Nero d'Avola and Cabernet Franc.
