Feudi del Pisciotto

Feudi del Pisciotto is a Sicilian wine estate with rooms, built around a restored 18th-century farm in the hills behind Niscemi, in the Val di Noto of south-east Sicily. Its vines sit in the heart of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria zone, home of Sicily's only DOCG wine. Guests sleep at the old press house, dine above a glass-floored barrel cellar, and taste wines whose labels are drawn by Italian fashion houses.

About Feudi del Pisciotto

The estate stands in Contrada del Pisciotto, on the edge of the Sughereta di Niscemi nature reserve and a short drive from the sea. Its 49 hectares of vines, nearly 70 football pitches of them, climb to 300 metres. Around the buildings, the cork woods of the reserve take over.

At the centre is the palmento, one of the biggest in Sicily. In this stone press house, grapes were once trodden in eight great basins, and the tannin stains still mark the stone. Today it is a small museum, joined to a modern winery. The estate belongs to Paolo Panerai's Castellare group, which also makes wine in Tuscany. The winemaking follows the teachings of Giacomo Tachis, the man behind many of Italy's most famous reds.

The wines run from the Sicilia DOC lines Le Maioliche and Colori di Sicilia to labels signed by Italian fashion houses, Versace's Nero d'Avola among them. Two wines stand at the top of the range: L'Eterno, a Pinot Nero, and Moro di Testa, a Syrah. A sweet passito of Gewurztraminer and Semillon is named after Tachis himself. The label of L'Eterno shows a detail from a Giacomo Serpotta triptych whose restoration the estate paid for.

The farm also carries a war story. On 9 July 1943, American paratroopers landed in its courtyard, and two days later 95 of them fought off a German column of about 700 men. The walls still show the bullet marks, and in July 2025 the estate was declared a Place of Memory. A photo of the fighting, probably taken by the war photographer Robert Capa, reached the estate decades later from a veterans' association.

Visits centre on the wine relais: fifteen rooms in the restored buildings, a pool above the vines, a wellness area and a restaurant set over the barrel cellar. The cellar tour and tasting is open to outside visitors too, with a booking. There is even a residential cookery school run with Le Cirque of New York. Courses run from two or three days up to two weeks.
