Why this drive: Lambrusco is the wine Britain thinks it knows from the sweet pink fizz of the 1980s, and one easy loop out of Modena corrects that in a weekend. Three DOC zones sit within forty minutes of the city, each with its own grape and its own style. Pale, sharp Sorbara grows on the river plain, Salamino at Santa Croce with its salami-shaped bunches, dark and tannic Grasparossa in the hills. The oldest winery in Emilia-Romagna, Cleto Chiarli, has poured the proof since 1860. Between cellars you eat better than almost anywhere in Italy, and the loop ends at Spilamberto's balsamic museum, where the barrels outlive their owners.

Stop 1 · The food capital start

Modena

ZTL city, see the driving notes

Cathedral city and the region's food capital: balsamic attics, Parmigiano counters and the Mercato Albinelli inside the camera-ringed old town.

What to taste here

  • ModenaDOC The city's catch-all DOC for everyday dark fizz
  • Lambrusco di SorbaraDOC Cleto Chiarli's Vecchia Modena: Emilia-Romagna's oldest winery, founded 1860

Park at Del Centro and walk everything. The communal acetaia in the town hall attic shows how traditional balsamic is aged before you see the museum at Spilamberto.

Where to eat

Hand-rolled egg pasta behind the 1605 salumeria

Hosteria Giusti. Via Farini 75, four tables through the back of the Giusti deli; closed Sunday, Monday and all of August. Book well ahead.

2

Stop 2 · Sorbara's river plain

Bomporto

Comune on the Secchia plain that contains Sorbara itself, the village behind the palest and sharpest Lambrusco DOC.

What to taste here

  • Lambrusco di SorbaraDOC Pale, pink-edged and sharp: the most elegant Lambrusco of all
  • Metodo classico Sorbara Cantina della Volta reworks the village grape as traditional-method fizz

Cleto Chiarli's Tenuta Sozzigalli vineyards farm 30 unirrigated hectares here in the Sorbara heartland, and Cantina della Volta bottles the village benchmark in traditional method.

3

Stop 3 · Salamino's home ground

Carpi

Renaissance town whose frazione Santa Croce names the Salamino DOC; Piazza Martiri is one of Italy's largest squares.

What to taste here

  • Lambrusco Salamino di Santa CroceDOC Named for bunches shaped like little salami; Santa Croce is a Carpi frazione
  • Salamino The most widely planted Lambrusco grape in the province

Drink Salamino where it grows: the DOC heartland starts at the town's northern edge. Piazza Martiri and the Pio castle fill the walk before dinner.

Where to eat

Tortellacci of ricotta and mortadella with pistachio

Allosteria. Piazza Garibaldi 43, short-supply-chain Emilian cooking with house-made charcuterie; ring 339 803 3450.

Day 2 · Grasparossa hills and balsamic
4

Stop 4 · Grasparossa's hill villages

Castelvetro di Modena

Hill village where Grasparossa vines take over from the plain; towers above, cellar doors below, and a September grape festival.

What to taste here

  • Lambrusco Grasparossa di CastelvetroDOC The dark, tannic Lambrusco, grown on hillsides rather than plain
  • Malbo Gentile The local rarity Grasparossa growers like Opera|02 keep alongside

The sagra fills the last two September weekends with a kiosk tasting route. Out of season, book a cellar at an estate like Opera|02 at Levizzano instead.

Where to eat

Handmade pasta finished with the estate's own balsamic

Opera|02. Via Medusia 32 at Levizzano, the bistro of a working Grasparossa and balsamic estate; the dining room looks straight into the vines.

5

Stop 5 · Balsamic's home town

Spilamberto

Small town on the Panaro where the balsamic Consorteria keeps its museum and communal acetaia.

What to taste here

  • Lambrusco Grasparossa di CastelvetroDOC The same dark fizz, poured here to cut fried gnocco
  • Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale Aged 12 to 25 years and tasted by the drop at the museum

The Museo del Balsamico Tradizionale at Via Roncati 28 runs guided tastings at 10:45, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30, 12 euros with tasting; book a day ahead for weekends.

Before you ask

Modena Lambrusco Road, answered

Mostly no. The bottles poured on this loop are secco, dry, and the sweetish amabile style is a minority of what the zone makes. The sugary export Lambrusco of the 1970s and 80s built the reputation Britain remembers, but a dry Sorbara or Grasparossa from a grower is a different wine altogether.

Grape and ground. Lambrusco di Sorbara, from the plain between the Secchia and Panaro rivers, is the palest and sharpest, closer to rose than red. Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, around Carpi, takes its name from its salami-shaped bunches and sits in the middle for colour and body. Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, from the hills, is dark, fuller and gently tannic.

Del Centro, Via Fontanelli 18: 1,720 spaces at 1.20 euros an hour, capped at 8 euros a day, six minutes' walk into the centre. The old town itself is a ZTL watched by thirteen cameras around the clock, so do not follow the satnav past the gates. Piazza Tien An Men is the free option, fifteen minutes out.

On weekdays you can usually walk in, though booking is recommended. On weekends and holidays booking at least a day ahead is mandatory. Guided tours with a tasting run at 10:45, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 in Italian and English, 12 euros full price, and the museum at Via Roncati 28 closes on Mondays and Wednesday afternoons.

The last two weekends of September, when Castelvetro's Sagra dell'Uva e del Lambrusco Grasparossa turns the village into a tasting route; the 2026 edition, the 59th, runs 19 to 20 and 25 to 27 September. Spring and early summer are quieter and just as green. August is the month to skip: much of Modena's food scene, Hosteria Giusti included, closes.

No. The Lambrusco plain has no single signed strada del vino. The hills south of Modena belong to the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori Città Castelli Ciliegi, an association running since 1999, which covers the Grasparossa side. This loop instead follows the three Lambrusco DOC zones themselves, which no signed road joins up.

About 80 kilometres and well under two hours at the wheel across two days. Day one is Modena, Bomporto and Carpi on the plain; day two climbs to Castelvetro and finishes at Spilamberto. Nothing on the loop is more than 45 minutes from anything else.

Modena's Romanesque cathedral and its tower are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Mercato Albinelli covered market is the city's larder. Petrolheads can bolt on Maranello: the Ferrari museum sits about ten minutes' drive from Castelvetro. At Spilamberto the balsamic museum is the point of the town.
