The wine road association's own loop round the upper Orvieto hills. Two days from Castel Viscardo through Allerona, Fabro, Montegabbione, Parrano and Ficulle, home of Antinori's Castello della Sala. It ends on Orvieto's tufa rock, with two wells and the regional enoteca.

Before you ask
Umbria's roads, answered
The Sagrantino road if you drink red, the Etrusco Romana loop if you drink white. Montefalco's Sagrantino is the most tannic red in Italy, and its road runs two days from Foligno to Spoleto, both stations on the Rome to Ancona railway. The Orvieto loop is two days round seven hill villages, from Castel Viscardo to Orvieto. Orvieto has a station on the Rome to Florence line and a funicular up to the town.
Yes, in four days. Orvieto to Montefalco is 66 kilometres and about an hour and a quarter by road, so finish the Orvieto loop on the rock, sleep there, and drive east the next morning. Join the Sagrantino road at Montefalco, its middle, or start it properly at Foligno, 74 kilometres from Orvieto.
Orvieto's whites are picked from late August to October at Barberani, and its noble-rot Calcaia in five or six passes through November and December. Sagrantino comes in late, in the second and third weeks of October at most estates and from the end of September at a few. Mid-October catches both roads at work.
For the roads, yes: both run through hill villages with little public transport. You can still arrive by train. Foligno and Spoleto, the two ends of the Sagrantino road, are railway stations, and Orvieto's station sits below the town with a funicular up. Argillae at Allerona sends a shuttle from Orvieto for its tasting if you ask.
Perugia airport is 28 kilometres from Foligno, the start of the Sagrantino road, half an hour on the SS 75. For the Orvieto loop, Rome's airports and the A1 motorway to the Orvieto exit are the usual way in. Orvieto to Perugia is 76 kilometres by road, so one hire car covers both roads from either airport.
On the Sagrantino road, Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, dry and as the sweet Passito, and Montefalco Rosso DOC, the Sangiovese blend. On the Etrusco Romana loop, Orvieto DOC Classico and Superiore, the Muffa Nobile sweet wine, Rosso Orvietano and Lago di Corbara reds, and Umbria IGT. The white to ask for by name is Trebbiano Spoletino at the Montefalco end and Grechetto round Orvieto.
