Azienda Agricola Decugnano dei Barbi

Decugnano dei Barbi is a wine estate in the hills north-east of Orvieto, in Umbria. Its vines grow on sandy soil full of fossil seashells, left by a sea that covered the land millions of years ago. Claudio Barbi took on the abandoned estate in 1973, and his son Enzo carries on his work. The cellar makes Orvieto Classico whites, Umbrian reds, sparkling wines and a sweet noble rot wine. Tours, tastings and cooking classes can be booked online, and the estate's villa sleeps up to ten.

About Azienda Agricola Decugnano dei Barbi

The first written record of Decugnano dates from 1212. That year two priests, Giovanni and Pietro, were put in charge of the land around the church of Santa Maria di Decugnano, which belonged to Orvieto's cathedral. The wine they made went to the clergy of the town. By 1973 the land lay abandoned. Claudio Barbi, then 28, came across it by chance and decided to make it his own. He had travelled in France and worked on harvests there. At Decugnano he began restoring the vineyards and building a winery. The work he began now continues with his son, Enzo.

His first three wines came out in 1978, and all three labels are still made. One was a sparkling wine made by the Metodo Classico, a nod to Claudio's roots in Brescia. The estate says nobody in Umbria had tried one before. Claudio had seen the botrytis fungus at work in Sauternes, and he noticed that it was common around Orvieto too. In 1981 he made a sweet wine from only the grapes it had touched. He called it Pourriture Noble, French for noble rot, and the estate calls it the first wine of its kind made in Italy.

The vineyards sit at 320 metres, on the sandy ground north-east of Orvieto. It is the oldest of the four soil zones around the town, the floor of a sea about three million years ago. The soil is full of fossil shells and oysters. The white Frammento is named after those shell fragments, and Mare Antico after the ancient sea itself. The vines face south-east and south-west, and they are never watered. The estate also keeps 25 hectares of woodland, about 35 football pitches, which nobody has ever cleared.

In 1973 procanico, a form of Trebbiano, dominated the vineyards of Orvieto. Claudio wanted to go beyond it, so he planted grechetto, little used at the time, and Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino and Semillon followed. For reds he set Cabernet Sauvignon beside Sangiovese, then added Merlot, Pinot Noir, Montepulciano and Syrah. Fifty years of trials have taught the estate which grapes suit its soil.

Mare Antico, an Orvieto Classico Superiore, comes from the oldest vines, and the estate says it is the wine that best represents Decugnano. Gambero Rosso's guide has given it the Tre Bicchieri award for several vintages, the 2023 among them. A.D.1212, a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano, is the estate's most important red, named after the year of the first record. The sparkling wines rest for about three and a half years in caves beneath the hill, which the estate calls Etruscan. Their bottles are still turned and cleared by hand.

Out in the vineyards, the estate works under SQNPI, Italy's national scheme for integrated farming, checked by an independent body. That means no spraying on fixed dates. The team watches the weather and each plot, and treats only when it must, with the mildest products it can find. Pheromones, not insecticide, keep the grape moth in check. Solar panels cover more than three quarters of the winery's power, and the bottles are made of lightweight glass. The estate is clear that it is not organic.

Visits are by appointment, every day of the week. The wine tour takes in the vineyards, the cellar and the caves, then four wines with local cured meats and cheeses. Two cooking classes teach Umbrian dishes. In one, guests make three fresh pastas and taste each with a different wine. Villa Barbi is a house on the estate with a pool and five bedrooms. It is let only as a whole, to groups of up to ten, for four nights or more. The old church of Santa Maria di Decugnano, no longer used for worship, now hosts weddings for up to 120 people.
