Arnaldo Caprai

Umbria, Italy

The Caprai estate at Località Torre, just outside Montefalco, is the producer who turned dry Sagrantino into a world reference. Arnaldo Caprai, an Umbrian textile entrepreneur, bought forty-two hectares here in 1971; his son Marco, who joined in 1986, drove the clonal-selection research and modern dry style that lifted Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG out of obscurity. The family farms 160 hectares across the four cardinal points of the DOCG zone today, with the Sagrantino DOCG 25 Anni as the global benchmark cuvée.

About Arnaldo Caprai

Arnaldo Caprai bought the Tenuta Val di Maggio at Località Torre in 1971, with forty-two hectares of which only four were already planted to vines. His ambition was the autochthonous Sagrantino, a thick-skinned, polyphenol-rich late-ripening grape historically used for passito wines but little known internationally. He was already an established Umbrian textile entrepreneur, recognised in 2002 with the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro for service to agriculture.

The trajectory pivoted in 1986, when Marco Caprai took over operational direction. From 1987 a long collaboration with the Istituto di Coltivazioni Arboree at the University of Milan began clonal-selection research on Sagrantino. The team recovered piante madri, mother plants, from old family vineyards across the DOCG zone, propagated them in nursery, and confirmed cordone speronato as the ideal training system for the local Pleistocene clays. The first selected vines were planted in 1994 in an experimental block adjacent to the cellar.

Early in the 1990s the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG 25 Anni won critical attention internationally and reset perceptions of the appellation. The 25 Anni and its stablemates 50 Anni, Spinning Beauty, Valdimaggio, Dante, and Collepiano now anchor a Sagrantino lineup built around tannin management: long phenolic ripening in vineyard, then extended barrique ageing to soften without flattening the variety's aggressive structure.

Sustainability is central to the modern estate. Caprai is Equalitas-certified since 2019, the year the protocol launched, and was the lead promoter of New Green Revolution, the first Italian wine-sector sustainability protocol, validated by CSQA in 2013. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 have been in place since the early 2000s, and the in-house R&D laboratory runs Vineyard Connected and Agroclim Technology projects on precision viticulture and climate adaptation.

Beyond Sagrantino, the 160 hectares grow Grechetto for the Anima Umbra Grechetto Umbria IGT, Sangiovese for the Montefalco Rosso DOC blend, plus Merlot, Pinot Nero, Chardonnay and Sauvignon for IGT bottlings. The cellar at Località Torre opens daily for tastings, from a 45-minute Essenziale led by the in-house Wine Educators to a three-hour Pic Nic in Vigna among the Sagrantino vines. The Terrazza Monte della Torre overlooks the hilltop village of Montefalco, with vineyards stepping down toward the Valle Umbra.
