Two days along the Slovenian border: the Gorizia loop of the regional wine road through Oslavia, San Floriano, Cormons and Capriva, then over the Judrio into the Colli Orientali for Prepotto, Rosazzo, Buttrio and Cividale.

La Castellada

Ten hectares on the Oslavia ridge above Gorizia, farmed by three generations of the Bensa family. The property began as a tavern in 1954 and has bottled under the La Castellada label since 1985. The estate is a founding voice in the Ribolla di Oslavia association, which turned this thick-skinned local grape into a serious macerated white. Whites ferment with native yeasts and long skin contact in conical vats, age in old Slavonian botti and tonneaux, and are bottled without filtration. The range covers Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio Ramato and a long-macerated Bianco della Castellada blend, plus a small-parcel Merlot.

Azienda Agricola Schiopetto

The Collio cellar where Mario Schiopetto bottled the first pure 'Tocai' in 1965 and started modern Italian white wine. The Rotolo family runs it today. The vines grow on ponca marl around the Palazzo Arcivescovile, and the Linea Mario Schiopetto whites cover Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Malvasia, Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio.

Azienda Agricola Russiz Superiore

Sixth-generation Felluga estate at Capriva del Friuli in the Collio hills, bought by Marco Felluga in 1967. Whites lead: Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Ribolla Gialla and Sauvignon Blanc, plus the Col Disore blend and the red Rosso Riserva degli Orzoni. The farm is VIVA-certified, the cellar runs on its own solar power, and there are three bookable tastings and rooms at the Relais on the estate.

Azienda Agricola Radikon Stanislao

Radikon's vines sit on the ponca slopes of Oslavia, on Italy's border with Slovenia. The family helped define modern Italian orange wine when Stanko began fermenting Ribolla on its skins in 1995. His son Sasa now runs the estate: three months on the skins, zero added sulphur, and a Venezia Giulia IGT label.

Azienda Agricola Gravner Francesco sits on the Collio slopes above Oslavia, on the Italian-Slovenian border in Gorizia province. Joško Gravner ferments his whites in qvevri, Georgian clay vessels buried in the cellar floor, and releases Ribolla Anfora only after about seven years. Around 35,000 bottles a year; visits by appointment for up to six guests.
