Azienda Agricola Venica & Venica

Venica & Venica is a family wine estate at Dolegna del Collio, in the far north-east of Italy, a few minutes from the Slovenian border. The Venica family has farmed here since 1930 and is now in its fourth generation. Its vines cover about 56 football pitches of Collio hillside, and more than four fifths of them are white grapes. The two wines to know are Ronco delle Mele, a Sauvignon, and Ronco delle Cime, a Friulano. The estate takes visitors from Monday to Saturday and has rooms on site.

About Azienda Agricola Venica & Venica

Daniele Venica bought the heart of the estate in 1930, and the family has not stopped buying hillsides since. His grandsons Gianni and Giorgio built the modern business. The fourth generation, Giampaolo and Serena, now work alongside Gianni and Ornella Venica. The wine is still made where the story began, at Località Cerò in Dolegna del Collio, the northern tip of the Collio hills.

The estate grew one hill at a time. Sauvignon went in on the north-west side of the Cerò hill in 1981, and by 1993 the family owned the whole hill, about 17 football pitches of vines. Blocks of about seven pitches each followed at Bernizza in 1983, Meden in 1987, Cime in 2002 and Ruttars in 2013. Cime is the highest vineyard and grows the Friulano for Ronco delle Cime. Everything sits inside the Collio DOC, on the crumbly marl and sandstone that Friulians call ponca.

Sauvignon and Friulano are the reason people seek the estate out. Ronco delle Mele, the Sauvignon from a single hillside, won Gambero Rosso's top award, Tre Bicchieri, for its 2020 vintage. Ronco delle Cime did the same for its 2021 Friulano. Around them sit a Pinot Grigio called Jesera, a Pinot Bianco called Tàlis, a Malvasia called Pètris and a Ribolla Gialla named L'Adelchi, after Gianni and Giorgio's father. Reds are a small side line: Merlot, Refosco and Schioppettino.

The family measures its footprint rather than talking about it. Venica joined VIVA, Italy's national sustainability scheme for wine, in 2011. It published its first sustainability report in 2019 and earned SQNPI certification in 2021, a national scheme for keeping vineyard treatments to the minimum that monitoring shows is needed. Solar panels have made the estate's electricity and hot water since 2006, and a wood-fired boiler has run since 2007. In 2025 the estate became one of the first Italian wineries certified for gender equality.

Visitors are welcome from Monday to Saturday, in small numbers, so book ahead. The cellar tour walks through the old-vintage cellar, the oak cellar, the fermentation hall, a vineyard and the bottling line before the tasting, which comes with local cheeses. The family also runs six rooms and two apartments in the late nineteenth-century farmhouse where the estate began, with a salt-purified pool and bikes for the Collio lanes.
