Bastianich

Bastianich is the Friulian wine estate of the Bastianich family, better known for its restaurants in the United States. The family planted its first vines in 1997 outside Cividale del Friuli, in the Colli Orientali. It now farms 27 hectares of vines, about 38 football pitches, on two hills. The warmer Premariacco hill grows the top wines, Vespa Bianco and Plus among them. The cooler Cividale hill grows the everyday Orsone range. Tastings run for about an hour and a half and can be booked online.

About Bastianich

The Bastianich family made its name with restaurants in New York, not with wine. From the 1970s its restaurants put Friulian wines on their lists, and the family got to know the growers behind them. Its roots are in Italy's north-east, and in 1997 it planted its own vines outside Cividale del Friuli.

The estate owns every vine it farms, all inside the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC, on two separate hills. The Premariacco hill is the warmest, southernmost corner of the zone, warmed by air off the sea. The Cividale hill, a few miles north, is cooled by the bora wind coming down from the mountains. The soil on both is ponca, the crumbly marl and sandstone that runs under these eastern Friuli hills.

The two hills make two ranges. From Premariacco come the fuller wines the estate is known for. Vespa Bianco is a white built on Chardonnay and Sauvignon, and it has won Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri five times. Plus is a Friulano from a single hilltop vineyard of vines more than seventy years old. Vespa Rosso and Calabrone are the reds. From Cividale comes the Orsone range: fresh Friulano, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Ribolla Gialla. The reds are Schioppettino and Refosco, and there is a sparkling Ribolla Gialla made in the tank method.

Twenty people pick the grapes by hand for at least two months every autumn, the same team each year. The first sorting happens in the vineyard. A second one happens at the cellar door, where a machine picks out anything the pickers missed.

The estate takes visitors at its cellar on Via Darnazzacco, at Gagliano just outside Cividale. A cellar tour with a tasting takes about an hour and a half, in English or Italian, for groups of up to five. There are two versions, one with four wines and one with six. Each pours bottles from both hills, so you taste the difference in one sitting. Both can be booked online, or arranged by email with the winery. A third card on this page is a two-night stay at the Vigne del Malina farmhouse nearby, and its Bastianich half is the same four-wine tasting.
