About Livio Felluga

Livio Felluga came back from the Second World War to a Rosazzo that had been left to itself. He spent the rest of his long life replanting it, and died in 2016 at 102. He is called the father of modern Friulian wine for that reason. In 1956 he put an old map of Friuli on his labels, so that every bottle would say where it came from. Seventy years on, the same map is still on every bottle.

His children carry the estate on. It now farms 242 hectares in all, 187 of them under vine. The vines are split into more than 300 small plots between Brazzano and the Rosazzo hills. Fourteen grape varieties go into nineteen wines. The soil is the crumbly marl and sandstone the Friulians call ponca, the same rock that runs under the Collio to the south.

The white to know is Terre Alte, first made in 1981 from Friulano, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon. It is named after the high Rosazzo vineyards it grows on. Abbazia di Rosazzo adds Malvasia Istriana and Ribolla Gialla to the same idea. Illivio is a white the children made for their father's eighty-fifth birthday. The reds to know are Sossó, a Merlot and Refosco blend named after a stream, and Pignolo Eremita. Pignolo is a grape that nearly vanished before it was saved on this hill. The everyday range runs from Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Ribolla Gialla through Merlot and Refosco to the sweet Picolit.

The Abbey of Rosazzo is where the story is told. A hermit settled on this hill in the ninth century, and monastic orders tended its vines and olives for centuries after him. A Venetian scholar was praising its wines in 1483. The Felluga family tends the abbey's vineyards and olive trees. It also looks after the abbey's ageing cellar, the oldest in Friuli at more than seven hundred years. In May 2025 the family opened new tasting rooms inside the abbey walls.

A tasting takes you through the map wines in the rooms the family opened in 2025. La Castellada

Ten hectares on the Oslavia ridge above Gorizia, farmed by three generations of the Bensa family. The property began as a tavern in 1954 and has bottled under the La Castellada label since 1985. The estate is a founding voice in the Ribolla di Oslavia association, which turned this thick-skinned local grape into a serious macerated white. Whites ferment with native yeasts and long skin contact in conical vats, age in old Slavonian botti and tonneaux, and are bottled without filtration. The range covers Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio Ramato and a long-macerated Bianco della Castellada blend, plus a small-parcel Merlot.
