Tasting Notes

How Livio Felluga Friulano tastes, from lychee to bitter almond

Livio Felluga's Friulano opens on lychee, Renetta apple and orange blossom, then turns full and harmonious. A few months resting on its yeast builds savouriness and a creamy feel. The winery gives the same note for the 2024 and the 2025, both at 13% alcohol.

Finish

It closes on a pleasing stony note with bergamot, mango and pear. Then comes the bitter almond aftertaste that the winery calls characteristic.

Overall

From Livio Felluga's Classici range, this Friulano rates well with drinkers, who most often name pear, peach, apple and citrus. We would drink the 2024 by 2030 and the 2025 by 2029.

Wine fit score

Where Livio Felluga Friulano scores best

Best with food and Best intro to this style lead the scores. Livio Felluga's Friulano is a full, harmonious dry white that the winery pairs with cured ham, fish and fresh cheese.

Best with food 8.2/10

Full and harmonious, with lively acidity and a savoury edge. Livio Felluga pairs it with prosciutto, salami, fish and fresh cheese, and it also handles creamy risotto.

Best intro to this style 8.0/10

Dry, fruity and floral, with lychee, apple and orange blossom. It is an easy first taste of Friulano, which the winery calls the most traditional Friulian wine.

Best for an occasion 6.0/10

A smart bottle for a fish supper or an aperitif with cured ham. It still wears the map label Livio Felluga created in 1956.

Best everyday bottle 5.5/10

Dry, fruity and good with food, but at about £27 for the 2025 it is more of a weekend bottle than a weekday one.

Best value 5.0/10

About £27 for the 2025 and £29 for the 2024 is more than a typical Friuli Colli Orientali white costs. You pay for the Livio Felluga name and hand-picked hillside grapes, not for long ageing.

Best for cellar 3.5/10

Made to drink within a few years: a few months on its yeast, then bottled. We would drink the 2024 by 2030 and the 2025 by 2029.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Livio Felluga and the map label behind this Friulano

Livio Felluga created the winery's map label in 1956, inspired by an old map of Friuli. Today the winery farms 187 hectares of vines, about 260 football pitches, and makes 19 wines. Its Friulano grows on marl and sandstone, which the winery says gives its wines a savoury, stony edge.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Friuli Colli Orientali is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 2 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 11.0 tonnes per hectare
  • Tasting panel. No mandatory pre-release tasting

Grapes picked by hand on Livio Felluga's hillside vineyards

    Cost up

Livio Felluga picks its Friulano by hand to keep the berries whole, then destems and presses them gently. Picking by hand takes more time and labour than a machine.

  2. 02

The Livio Felluga name and the map label created in 1956

    Cost up

Livio Felluga created its map label in 1956, and the winery calls it an icon of winemaking excellence. The name helps explain why the 2025, at about £27, costs more than a typical Friuli Colli Orientali white.

  3. 03

A few months on its yeast, then a rest in bottle

    Cost up

After fermenting in temperature-controlled steel tanks, the wine rests a few months on its yeast for savouriness and a creamy feel. It then rests again in bottle in temperature-controlled rooms, which takes cellar space and time.

  4. 04

    No long ageing before sale

    Cost down

With only a few months on its yeast before bottling, no money sits for years in the cellar. The 2025 is on sale now, a year after its harvest.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT on a 13% white

    Cost up

Of a £27 bottle of the 2025, about £7.50 is tax: £2.99 of duty on 13% alcohol at £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol, plus £4.50 of VAT.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Prosciutto, fish and fresh cheese with Livio Felluga Friulano

Livio Felluga calls its Friulano a traditional aperitif and a perfect match for prosciutto crudo and salami. It also suits fish dishes and fresh, full-fat cheeses. Its lively acidity and savoury edge cut through salt and fat, but hot chilli is best avoided.

Salt balance Strong match

Prosciutto crudo and salami as an aperitif

Livio Felluga calls its Friulano a traditional aperitif and a perfect match for prosciutto crudo and salami. The savoury edge of this dry white meets the salt in the ham, and its lively acidity rinses away the fat.

Try with: Prosciutto crudo · Salame · Gnocco fritto

Fat cutting Strong match

Fresh, full-fat cheeses and Friuli's frico

Fresh, full-fat cheeses are on the winery's own list for this Friulano. The acidity of this dry white cuts through creamy mozzarella and burrata. Its full, harmonious feel also stands up to frico, Friuli's crisp Montasio cheese pancake.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · Burrata · Frico · Fresh ricotta

Acidity matching Good match

Salt cod, lagoon shrimp and mussels

The winery also suggests fish dishes with its Friulano. The lively acidity of this dry white works like a squeeze of lemon on creamy salt cod, tiny lagoon shrimp and mussels.

Try with: Baccala Mantecato · Polenta e schie · Impepata di cozze · Fregula ai frutti di mare · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fish and chips, potted shrimp and smoked salmon

A dry white like Livio Felluga's Friulano cuts through batter and butter and leaves your mouth clean for the next bite. Its savoury edge also meets the salt and smoke of smoked salmon.

Try with: Fish and Chips · Potted Shrimp · Scottish Smoked Salmon · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Risi e bisi, saffron risotto and pesto

Full and harmonious in the mouth, this Friulano has enough weight for creamy rice and pasta without swamping them. Its chamomile and elderflower notes suit the spring peas of risi e bisi and the basil in trofie al pesto.

Try with: Risi e bisi · Risotto alla Milanese · Trofie al pesto · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot chilli and fiery curries

Chilli heat makes the 13% alcohol in this dry Friulano burn and buries its lychee and orange blossom. Keep madras curry, jungle curry and chilli pizza for another bottle.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Jungle Curry · Mapo tofu · Pizza Diavola · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Keeping Livio Felluga Friulano: the 2024 to 2030, the 2025 to 2029

This is a white to drink within a few years, not one to lay down. A few months on its yeast gives it some ageing potential, and we would drink the 2024 by 2030 and the 2025 by 2029. The winery also makes Sigar, a second Friulano from vines planted in 1963.

Friulano, Friuli Colli Orientali and Livio Felluga: where this wine fits

Common Questions

It is a full, harmonious dry white with lychee, Renetta apple and orange blossom on the nose. Chamomile and elderflower follow, then a stony finish with bergamot, mango and pear. The winery describes a characteristic bitter almond aftertaste.

Yes. Livio Felluga says this wine was once called Tocai Friulano. Today its label simply says Friulano.

Cured meats come first: Livio Felluga calls it a traditional aperitif and a perfect match for prosciutto crudo and salami. It also suits fish dishes and fresh, full-fat cheeses. Avoid hot chilli, which makes the alcohol burn and hides the wine's floral side.

The 2025 starts at about £27 a bottle and the 2024 at about £29, with UK duty and VAT paid. Of a £27 bottle, about £7.50 is tax.

We would drink the 2024 by 2030 and the 2025 by 2029, and both are ready now. A few months on its yeast gives the wine some ageing potential, but this is not a white for long cellaring.
