Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino

Eight hectares in the Dardi corner of Bussia, farmed by two brothers, with the oldest vines planted in the 1940s. Their declassified Barolo Riserva, Laboro Disobedient, wears a cartoon label.

Azienda Agricola Elio Altare

La Morra estate at the heart of the modernist Barolo movement, farmed by the Altare family since 1948 across plots in Arborina, Brunate, Cannubi and Cerretta. About 10 hectares and 70,000 bottles a year, with low-intervention vineyards and unfiltered wines from wild yeasts. Silvia Altare runs it now, with father Elio still in the vineyards. Three wines are stocked here: Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba.

Azienda Agricola Poderi Marcarini

Six generations of Barolo at La Morra, from a cellar built into an 18th century house beside a medieval tower. Marcarini has held land in Brunate and La Serra for generations. It named one vineyard on a Barolo label back in 1958. At Berri it still farms a patch of Dolcetto that grows on its own roots. The village wine shop runs cellar tours and tastings.

Ettore Germano

Family estate at Località Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba, in the same hands since 1856 and bottling as Ettore Germano since 1975. Ten hectares of Barolo vineyards include Cerretta, Prapò, Vignarionda and a Lazzarito Riserva, with nine more at Cigliè in the Alta Langa for Riesling Hérzu and sparkling wine. A member of the Viticoltura Armoniosa programme, now converting to organic farming.
