La Scolca is the Soldati family's estate at Rovereto di Gavi, in southeastern Piedmont. The family has bottled Cortese here as estate wine since 1919. The flagship is the Gavi dei Gavi Black Label, a trademark the family registered in 1969. That bottle set the modern reputation of Gavi DOCG. Like all the estate's Gavi it is pure Cortese, dry, and built on acidity rather than weight. Some vines are more than sixty years old, and visits run by appointment on weekdays.
Book a visitThe Soldati family planted its first Cortese vines at Rovereto di Gavi in 1919. This is the corner of Piedmont where Alessandria meets the Apennine foothills. Here the sea breeze from Liguria starts to thin the air. Five generations later, the family still works the same hillside. The estate stands on one grape, Cortese, and one wine, Gavi DOCG.
Some vines are more than sixty years old. They grow on clay-rich soils that hold water through Piedmont's dry summers. Picking is by hand, into small baskets. The grapes reach the cellar within thirty minutes of being cut, so the aromas in the fruit stay intact. Yields are kept low. Harvest runs slightly earlier than the regional average. That earlier picking gives the wines their signature lift of acidity.
Fermentation runs cold, at 13 to 14°C, in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The wines then stay on their lees to build complexity, and sulphite use is held to a minimum. The cellar is built into the hillside on three levels and runs on its own solar power system. The estate is certified under SQNPI, Italy's national integrated-production sustainability programme. It also holds FSSC 22000 certification for food safety.
The flagship is the Gavi dei Gavi Black Label, the bottle that built the international reputation of Gavi DOCG. Alongside it sit the Gavi del Comune di Gavi White Label, the Il Valentino Gavi, and the long-aged Gold Edition and Limited Edition. There is also the d'Antan range of traditional-method sparkling wine, a small Pinot Nero project, and the lighter RosaChiara rosé. The constant is Gavi DOCG: 100% Cortese, dry, and built on acidity rather than weight.
Visits and tastings run by appointment, hosted at the estate from Monday to Friday during office hours. Booking goes through the winery's enquiry form or [email protected]. La Scolca also runs a Yacht and Jet service for private buyers. It works with luxury hospitality clients in more than sixty export markets. The Gavi hillside stays at the centre of every bottle.
