Campania · Wine route · 2 days
Why this drive: No other two days in Italy put a sea cliff, a live volcano and a smoking caldera into the same wine glass. The Costa d'Amalfi vines hang off terraces above the water. Vesuvius grows Lacryma Christi inside a national park, on ash. The Campi Flegrei still farm Falanghina and Piedirosso on their own roots, because the volcanic sand kept phylloxera out. And between the three you drive the most famous coast road in Europe, with Pompeii ten minutes off the route.
The route, drawn
Tap a day in the legend to bring its legs forward. The map follows as you scroll the stops, and a press on any marker jumps to it.
Stop 1 · The cliff cellar
The cliff village with the fjord, and the Cantine Marisa Cuomo cellar cut into the rock above the SS 163.
What to taste here
Cantine Marisa Cuomo, Via G.B. Lama 16/18, founded in 1980 by Andrea Ferraioli and Marisa Cuomo on about ten hectares of terraces. Wine tours are booked by phone or the estate's form, Monday to Saturday 9 to 18, Sunday 9.30 to 14.30. The Fiordo di Furore is under the road bridge below the village.
Where to eat
Hostaria di Bacco. Via G.B. Lama 9, a few doors from the Cuomo cellar, an hostaria since 1930 with rooms above it.
Stop 2 · Terraces above the sea
The hill town above Amalfi that gives the second subzone its name, with vines on the terraces under Villa Cimbrone.
What to taste here
The centre is a camera zone all day except 6 to 8 in the morning. Leave the car at the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer on Via della Repubblica or at Piazza Duomo. The road up from Atrani is the SS 373. Amalfi, on the way, has one long-stay garage, the Luna Rossa at the Atrani tunnel.
Stop 3 · Tintore and the pizza village
The mountain village behind the coast, home of the Tintore grape, ungrafted century-old vines and the pizza its emigrants took round the world.
What to taste here
Tenuta San Francesco, Via Fieccia, offers a wine tour, a tasting and a cooking class, booked ahead by phone or form. Giuseppe Apicella, Via Castello Santa Maria 1 at Capitignano, walks you through terraced vines under chestnut trees, by appointment. Sleep here: day two leaves over the Chiunzi pass from this side.
Stop 4 · Lacryma Christi in the park
Estate at Via Panoramica 6, Boscotrecase, inside the Vesuvius National Park and 7 km from Pompeii.
What to taste here
Tours, sommelier tastings and vineyard walks are sold through the estate's own booking site. It is the one Vesuvius stop you can fix in advance. Pompeii is ten minutes down the hill if you want the ruins before the wine.
Where to taste
Booking required
Stop 5 · Ungrafted vines on the ash
The Setaro family's cellar at Via Bosco del Monaco 34, Trecase, farming ungrafted vines inside the national park.
What to taste here
Tastings are arranged by phone or WhatsApp on +39 351 542 4946. The family's restaurant with rooms, Vigna delle Rose on Via Cifelli, is the lunch on this side of the mountain.
Where to eat
Vigna delle Rose. Via Cifelli 10, Trecase, Casa Setaro's restaurant with five rooms among the vines. Book on [email protected] or +39 351 542 4946.
Stop 6 · The Roman port
The Roman port of Puteoli at the heart of the Campi Flegrei, with the Flavian amphitheatre, the Macellum by the harbour and the Rione Terra on its rock.
What to taste here
The old town is a 24-hour camera zone: park by the port and walk. The Rione Terra opens daily 9 to 17.30 with booking through CoopCulture. The amphitheatre and the Macellum share a 4 euro ticket sold only through the Musei Italiani app. The Solfatara crater has been closed since 2017.
Where to eat
Abraxas Osteria. Via Scalandrone 15, above Lake Lucrino. Evenings only Monday to Friday from 20.00, lunch and dinner on Saturday, lunch on Sunday; closed Tuesday.
Stop 7 · Vines on their own roots

What to taste here
Three tastings, Tradizione at 20 euros, Selezione at 35 and Completa at 50, each about an hour. Visits are by reservation on Friday 8.30 to 17 and Saturday 8.30 to 13. Book on the estate's form or by WhatsApp. The Fusaro station is 450 metres away if someone is coming by train.

Wines to Try

Before you go
Visit prices are set by the winery and availability should be checked before travelling. Bookings open on the estate page or the provider's site.
When to go
May, June and the first half of October: the cliff road moves and the cellars have time. The Salerno ferries to Amalfi run from April to October. Harvest on the coast and on Vesuvius is September into October. From 1 August to 30 September the SS 163 plate rule applies every day between 10 and 18, and in July only at weekends. The Bacoli restricted zones run day and night from 1 June to 13 September 2026, so end the day there in spring or autumn if you can.
Booking reality
Two estates on this drive book online in our records. Sorrentino at Boscotrecase sells tours, tastings and vineyard walks through its own booking site. La Sibilla at Bacoli offers three tastings at 20, 35 and 50 euros, about an hour each, on Fridays and Saturday mornings, by reservation. Marisa Cuomo at Furore takes wine tour bookings by phone or form, Monday to Saturday 9 to 18 and Sunday mornings. Tenuta San Francesco and Apicella at Tramonti and Casa Setaro at Trecase answer by phone or email. Book a week ahead in September.
Driving notes
Day one is the SS 163 Amalfitana, the cliff road from Vietri to Positano. From Easter week, every summer weekend and daily in August and September, it runs alternate number plates between 10 and 18. Odd plates drive on odd dates, even on even, and hire cars are not exempt. Two wheels are. Leave Tramonti by the Valico di Chiunzi pass, the road over the Lattari mountains to the Vesuvius side. It is the direct way, and it avoids going back along the coast. On day two the roads are wide and quiet until Pozzuoli, whose old town is a 24-hour camera zone. Fuel is easy on the Vesuvius side and scarce on the cliff, so fill up at Tramonti.
ZTL
Ravello's centre is a camera zone 24 hours a day except from 6 to 8 in the morning. The gates are on Via della Marra, Via Boccaccio, Via Gradillo and Via Giacchino d'Anna. Park at the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer car park on Via della Repubblica or at Piazza Duomo and walk. Pozzuoli's old town and the Corso Umberto stretch are a 24-hour zone with four cameras, so stop at the port car parks. Bacoli's Marina Grande, Via Poggio and Via Pennata are closed to visitors' cars day and night from 1 June to 13 September 2026. The Baia port gate runs from 19 June to 6 September. La Sibilla is on Via Ottaviano Augusto, the road between Baia and Bacoli, so in summer follow the estate's directions rather than the sat-nav's shortest line.
Getting a car
Collect at Naples Capodichino airport, where the desks sit in car park P5 with a free shuttle from arrivals. Drive to the coast via Salerno rather than through the city. Ask the desk for a plate whose last digit suits your cliff-road day, because the alternate-plate rule binds hire cars too. Do not take the car into Amalfi or Positano. If you stop in Amalfi, the Luna Rossa garage at the Atrani tunnel is the only long-stay car park. Hand the car back at Capodichino; Pozzuoli is about half an hour from the airport on the tangenziale.

Where to sleep on the route
One estate on this road has rooms, so you can book the cellar and the bed together.
Before you ask
On set days the SS 163 Amalfitana, from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, runs alternate plates between 10 and 18. Cars whose plate ends in an odd number drive on odd dates, even numbers on even dates. It runs through Easter week, at weekends and holidays from 1 June to 31 July and in October, and every day from 1 August to 30 September. Residents of the coast and two-wheelers are exempt; hire cars are not.
Under an hour of driving on day one, Furore to Ravello to Tramonti, though the cliff road can double that behind a bus. Day two is about two hours. That is 50 minutes over the Chiunzi pass to Boscotrecase, 50 minutes round the bay to Pozzuoli, and a quarter of an hour to Bacoli. With two cellar visits a day it is a full two days.
Not on this route. Sorrentino at Boscotrecase and La Sibilla at Bacoli sell tastings online through their own sites; La Sibilla opens for visits on Friday and Saturday morning. Marisa Cuomo at Furore takes bookings by phone, Monday to Saturday 9 to 18. Tenuta San Francesco and Giuseppe Apicella at Tramonti and Casa Setaro at Trecase ask you to phone or email ahead.
At Furore, on the SS 163 lay-bys or at your hotel; the village has no restricted zone. At Ravello, in the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer car park on Via della Repubblica or at Piazza Duomo, because the centre is a camera zone. At Bacoli, La Sibilla is on Via Ottaviano Augusto 19, 450 metres from the Fusaro station. From June to mid-September the Marina Grande and Baia port gates are down, so follow the estate's directions.
May, June or early October. The cliff road is free of the plate rule on weekdays until the end of July and again from October. The Salerno to Amalfi ferries run from April to October. The Bacoli summer gates are down from 1 June to 13 September. Harvest is September into October on all three volcanoes.
The wine of Vesuvius, made under the Vesuvio DOC in sixteen villages around the volcano since 1983. The white is built on Caprettone and Coda di Volpe, the red and rosé on Piedirosso with Sciascinoso and a little Aglianico. Some of the vines grow on their own roots, because phylloxera cannot live in the volcanic sand.
Yes. Pompeii is 7 km from Sorrentino's cellar at Boscotrecase. The site opens 9 to 19 from April to October, last entry 17.30, and 9 to 17 in winter. Tickets are 20 euros, carry your name and are capped at 20,000 a day, so buy them online before you go. Give it three hours and taste on Vesuvius in the afternoon.
Yes, from the Ercolano side. The Gran Cono path starts at the 1,000 metre car park at the end of the provincial road from Ercolano. The parking is booked and paid in advance through the Comune di Ercolano, and crater tickets carry your name. Allow half a day and do it before the cellars, not after.
Yes. Travelmar ferries run Salerno to Amalfi in about 35 minutes from April to October, and the SITA buses cover the SS 163. Tramonti and the Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei cellars need a car. The Circumvesuviana train reaches Pompei Scavi from Naples in about 40 minutes, and the Cumana line reaches Pozzuoli.
1 day
Three DOCGs in one 60 km hill circuit: Fiano in Lapio, Aglianico in Taurasi, Greco in Tufo, with Avellino as the base.
