Quirinoli is a small organic winery at Trecase, on the seaward slope of Vesuvius, 15 minutes from Pompeii. Brothers Giuseppe and Gennaro Ferraioli run it and make about 12,000 bottles a year. The vines grow on volcanic soil between 200 and 400 metres up, with the Gulf of Naples and Capri in view. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, red and white, leads eight wines from Piedirosso, Caprettone, Falanghina and Aglianico. Visitors book a tasting with lunch in a glass pavilion among the vines, with a free shuttle from Pompeii.
Book a visitTwo brothers run Quirinoli. Giuseppe and Gennaro Ferraioli farm the estate at Trecase with a small team, on the side of Vesuvius that faces the sea. The vineyards sit inside the Vesuvius National Park, between 200 and 400 metres up, and the sea below keeps the summers from getting too hot. From the lawn the view runs across the Gulf of Naples to Capri. The estate is certified organic, and it counts Slow Food and a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice award for 2025 among its recognitions.
The soil is dark volcanic ash and lapilli. It holds water so well that the vines are never irrigated. The brothers treat the vines only with organic fertiliser, sulphur and copper. They plant roses at the head of each row to show the health of the soil before any instrument does. Caprettone is a white grape found almost only on Vesuvius, named for the goat's-beard shape of its bunches. It grows on a high pergola whose leaves shade the thin-skinned bunches from the sun. Piedirosso, the red grape locals call Per e' Palummo for its pigeon-foot red stems, is trained mostly on Guyot wires to catch full sun. Aglianico, the big red grape of Campania, gives the estate its most structured wines and its sparkling rosé.
Aglianico is a third of what the estate makes, with Caprettone, Falanghina and Piedirosso at a fifth each and a little Primitivo. Three wines carry the Vesuvio DOC, the appellation of the volcano itself. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio comes in red, four parts Piedirosso to one of Aglianico, and in white, four parts Caprettone to one of Falanghina. Both are made in steel tanks, so the fruit comes through without any oak: a touch of volcanic smoke in the red, a salty finish in the white. Vincenza, named for the brothers' mother and labelled with the red coral of Torre del Greco, is Piedirosso on its own. Cenere, named after the volcanic ash, is the flagship: Aglianico, Piedirosso and Primitivo aged two years in French barriques. A Falanghina and an Aglianico carry the Campania IGT label. Two sparkling wines, Almalava from Falanghina and a rosé from Aglianico, round off the range, and a glass of bubbles opens every visit. The brothers also make honey, olive oil, a limoncello and cream liqueurs of pistachio, melon and banana.
A visit is lunch among the vines. Guests walk the vineyard first, then sit in a glass pavilion that looks over the rows to the sea. The Quirinus menu pairs four wines with Vesuvian cheeses and cured meats and the estate's own honey. Then come handmade ravioli in brown butter and sage, a lemon tart from a Marechiaro family recipe, and a liqueur to finish. The Hora menu adds a seasonal main course and runs to six wines and two liqueurs. The estate keeps only a few tables a day, takes no coaches, and sends a free shuttle to the Pompeii ruins or station on request. The tasting season runs from late March to October. Evenings can be booked for private dinners, weddings and company events, with a walking aperitivo in the garden first. The brothers also arrange horse rides on Vesuvius.
None of the eight wines is sold in the UK yet. Each has its page here, and the form on it asks the estate whether it can ship to you.
