Nativ is a winery in the hills of Irpinia, east of Naples in the province of Avellino. Winemaker Mario Ercolino and Roberta Pirone founded it in 2008 to work Campania's native grapes, Aglianico, Fiano, Greco and Falanghina, with modern methods. Some of its vines are up to 200 years old. Its reds include a Taurasi DOCG and several Irpinia Aglianico DOC wines; its whites include Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Two cellar tastings with local food can be booked online at the San Quirico winery near Paternopoli.
Book a visitMario Ercolino had spent years making wine in Irpinia before he and his wife Roberta Pirone started Nativ in 2008. He was one of the founders of Feudi di San Gregorio, started at Sorbo Serpico in 1986. The aim at Nativ was to take Campania's old native grapes and make them with modern equipment and careful ageing, without changing what the grapes are. The motto they chose says it in five words: Modern Wines from Ancient Vines.
The vineyards sit across the main wine areas of Irpinia, about 15 hectares in all, roughly 20 football pitches. Much of it runs along the ridge from Castelvetere sul Calore to Paternopoli, with a separate plot at Tufo and Torrioni for Greco. This is hill country, with cold winters, hot summers and big swings between day and night. The soil changes from field to field: layers of ash from old Vesuvius eruptions, limestone, sand and clay. Some vines are up to 200 years old, in pockets the phylloxera louse never reached. They give concentrated, complex wines.
Aglianico is the heart of the reds. Rue 333 is the Taurasi DOCG. Blu Onice is an Irpinia Aglianico DOC. Eremo San Quirico, the flagship, comes from a small and very old plot at Taurasi. The grapes are picked by hand into 20 kg crates, ferment for about three weeks in steel and then spend around 18 months in new French barriques. The whites are led by Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG, plus Falanghina. The Suadens range carries the Campania IGT label. Several of these wines, from Suadens to the Taurasi, are sold by UK shops.
The San Quirico winery is where it all comes together. Its barrel hall is built as a half circle, with the barrels in curved rows under a glass wall, and it doubles as the tasting room. Visits start at the entrance and move through storage and bottling to the barrel hall before the glasses come out. The winery sells two tastings on its own website, each with Irpinian finger food and its own olive oil. Nativ holds Equalitas certification, the Italian wine standard that audits environmental, social and economic practice, and it publishes a sustainability report every year. The wines now sell abroad, and the next generation of the family is part of the business.
