Bersano

Bersano is one of Piedmont's oldest wine houses, based since 1907 in Nizza Monferrato, the home town of Barbera d'Asti. The Massimelli family runs it today and farms ten hilltop farmsteads across the Monferrato and the Langhe, about 230 hectares in all. Barbera leads the range, bottled as Nizza and Barbera d'Asti, alongside Barolo from Cascina Badarina at Serralunga d'Alba, Ruchè, Moscato and Brachetto. Visitors tour the old cellars and two wine museums at Nizza, or taste Barolo with a view at Badarina.

About Bersano

Giuseppe Bersano was a butcher with a taste for wine when he founded the family winery in Nizza Monferrato in 1907. Five years later he bought Cascina Cremosina, a farmstead whose vines still give the house its Nizza. The turn came in 1935, when his son Arturo, a lawyer by training and a winemaker by choice, took over. His motto was simple: if you want to drink well, buy yourself a vineyard. He bought several, and built the company into one of the biggest names in Piedmont.

Arturo collected as hard as he farmed. In 1961 he opened the Museo delle Contadinerie, a museum of the tools of country life. It now sits on the UNESCO list with the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato landscape. In 1970 he added four centuries of wine prints, drawings and rare books, kept in the art nouveau house where the family once lived. In between, in 1964, he founded the Confraternita della Bagna Cauda to promote Piedmont's food and wine. Umberto Eco and Giorgio Bocca were among its members. In 1968 he bought Cascina Badarina at Serralunga d'Alba, an early move into Barolo.

The family sold the business to the Canadian drinks group Seagram in the early 1970s. In 1985 it came back into Italian hands, with Ugo Massimelli taking over the running of the house and modernising the cellars. His daughter Federica now leads it with her sisters and her son. The estate has grown to ten farmsteads, cascine in local speech, between the Monferrato and the Langhe. Together they cover about 230 hectares, roughly 320 football pitches. Cascina Generala at Agliano Terme, bought in 1995, gives the Nizza Riserva of the same name. Cascina San Pietro Realto at Castagnole Monferrato grows Ruchè and Grignolino, and Pallavicini at Mombaruzzo the Moscato and Brachetto.

Visitors have two doors. At Nizza Monferrato the Monferrato Experience takes in the wine shop, the historic cellars, the two museums and a tasting. The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, and Sunday visits are by appointment. At Cascina Badarina, about 14 football pitches of Nebbiolo climbing to 450 metres above sea level, tastings look out over the Barolo hills. The tastings run from four everyday wines to the house's icons. An e-bike ride through the vines is there for anyone who wants to earn the glass.

The 4 Sisters at Bersano Food Pairing

The 4 Sisters

2h From €35 per person

From breakfast to dinner. Four wines that don't ask for permission: they're uncorked, poured, and surprised. Easy to drink, never banal. Even history can be young. After the Museum and the cellars that preserve over a century of history, a change of pace awaits: four wines born in steel, fresh, direct, made to be together. The Pinot Spumante, to open the dance. The Sauvignon Blanc, taut and luminous. The Barbera d'Asti, the soul of Monferrato. And the Ruchè di Castagnole, the fragrant twist you don't expect. Water and breadsticks; platter upon request. A toast to today's way of drinking.

Our History at Bersano Tasting

Our History

1h 30 From €45 per person

The wines that have always been there. The ones on which trust has been built, sip after sip. Our signature, for almost 120 years. Between the Museum and the historic cellars, over a century isn't told: it's tasted. Five wines that have never followed trends, because they never needed them, are the ones that have made Bersano Bersano. The Arturo Metodo Classico Brut, where it all begins. The Roero Arneis Eroe. The Barbera d'Asti Superiore Costalunga and the Nebbiolo d'Alba Paisan, as genuine as the land that makes them. And the Moscato d'Asti Monteolivo, the smile with which we bid farewell. Water and breadsticks; platter upon request. The experience that explains who we are.
