About Roberto Sarotto

Giuseppe Sarotto came to Neviglie from Barbaresco in 1820 and was the first of the family to make wine. Under Giuseppe, his son Giovanni and his grandson Luigi Giovanni the estate made only Dolcetto, sold locally and shipped in bulk to England. War and the vine pest phylloxera brought it to a standstill in the early 1940s. Angelo Sarotto and his wife Maria kept the family land going and added new grapes such as Moscato, Freisa and Barbera.

The modern estate starts in 1984, when Angelo's son Roberto finished wine school in Alba. Seven years later he bought a 20-hectare property in Barolo, about 28 football pitches, a purchase the family calls its turning point. Vineyards in Neive's leading sites followed over the next few years, which added Barbaresco to the range. In the early 1990s Roberto and his wife Aurora expanded to the Gavi area and set up a second cellar there for the Gavi wines. A Langhe Rosso made with the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon is named after their son Enrico. A Barbera d'Alba is named after their daughter Elena, born in 1998.

Today the family farms about 90 hectares across Piedmont's best-known zones. Neviglie is home, with the main cellar and the Moscato d'Asti vines. Mango grows the Arneis and the Alta Langa. Barolo comes from San Ponzio in Barolo itself and from Bergera-Pezzole and Pallaretta in Novello. Barbaresco comes from Gaia Principe, Currà and San Cristoforo in Neive. Gavi comes from Zerbetta in Gavi itself and from Parodi Ligure. Almost all of it is picked by hand.

The cellar's talking point is a barrel. In recent years the estate built a new ageing hall with 63 oak casks of 5,000 to 10,000 litres. Among them stands one giant: an oak barrel of 47,800 litres, nearly 64,000 bottles' worth. Garbellotto of Conegliano built it from Slavonian oak, about 5.3 metres high and 4.7 across, and about ten craftsmen took two weeks to fit it. Guinness World Records confirmed it as the largest oak barrel in the world on 2 July 2022. It holds the Barolo Riserva Ai Fondatori, first made from the 2016 vintage in about 60,000 bottles. One euro from every bottle goes to charity, first a cancer research foundation at Candiolo and then a federation for rare childhood diseases. The name means 'to the founders' and honours Angelo and Maria.

Seven generations on, Enrico and Elena lead the estate with Roberto and Aurora. The range is the classic Piedmont set: Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto, Langhe Arneis, Gavi and Moscato d'Asti, plus Alta Langa and other sparkling wines, Barolo Chinato and grappa.
