What Biondi-Santi Brunello tastes like
The estate's own 2019 sheet lists cherry, wild berries, violet and juniper. Over a thousand Vivino drinkers add leather and tobacco as it ages. The fruit is estate Sangiovese, fermented with the vineyard's own wild yeasts.

Classic cherry and wild berries lead, with violet and the dark spice the estate itself picks out: bay leaf and juniper on the 2019. Older bottles move toward leather, tobacco and earth, the notes Vivino drinkers mention most, over a thousand times for this wine.
Medium-bodied and firm rather than plush. Bright acidity carries Morello cherry and a twist of orange zest, and the tannin is fine but insistent. The style comes from high vineyards and big old Slavonian casks, not new oak: no vanilla, just fruit, spice and grip.
Long and energetic, the producer's own word for the 2019's grip. Orange zest and a savoury, leathery edge stay behind.
The founding estate's calling card, made only from the family's own vineyards since 1888. Vivino's 33,000-plus drinkers average it 4.5 out of 5. Buy the five-star 2019 or 2020 to cellar, the 2017 to drink now.
Four vintages on sale, from £185
Seven shops list this wine for UK buyers today. The 2017 at £185 is the cheapest way in. The five-star 2019 and 2020 sit between £197 and £312. The 2012 is the mature, dearer pick.
Who this Brunello suits
At £185 to £312 a bottle this is a cellar wine and an occasion wine, not a weeknight red. The scores below break that down.
The original Brunello with five-star vintages on sale: few Italian reds carry more weight at a milestone dinner.
Brunello rules already hold the wine back four years, and this estate's five-star vintages drink well after decades. The 2019 should run to 2050.
Bright acidity and firm tannin are made for the table; beef, lamb, game and aged cheese all land inside its comfort zone.
The price, £185 to £312, is several times a typical Brunello's, paid for the founding estate's name and critic scores in the high 90s. Sound for what it is, never a bargain.
Firm tannin, savoury flavours and a three-figure price make this a wine to graduate to, not start with. A £20 Rosso di Montalcino teaches the grape first.
A three-figure, special-occasion red; nobody's Tuesday bottle.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

2012 to 2020: how the years compare
Montalcino's growers rated 2012, 2019 and 2020 five stars out of five, and 2020 was the last vintage ever given stars. 2017 was a hot four-star year that drinks earlier.

Five stars, and the last vintage Montalcino ever gave stars to. A mild winter, late-March snow and a hot, even summer led to picking from 9 September. It drinks a little earlier than the 2019.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that go with this wine
What to eat with Biondi-Santi's Brunello
Vivino's crowd and the estate's Italian stockist agree: bistecca alla fiorentina above all, then roast lamb, venison and aged pecorino. Bright Sangiovese acidity and dense tannin want protein and fat.
Chargrilled beef, bistecca alla fiorentina first
Rare beef with a charred crust meets the wine where it lives. The bright Sangiovese acidity cuts the fat, and the firm tannin binds to the protein and turns silky. This is the pairing Tuscans built the wine around.
Try with: Fiorentina steak · Ribeye steak · Sunday Roast Beef
Slow braises and game
Long-cooked meat softens this wine's dense tannin, and its leather and earth notes echo the pan juices. Its Italian stockist points to braised and roast red meat first.
Try with: Venison Stew · Beef stew · Lamb shank · More pairings →
Aged pecorino and hard cheeses
Hard aged cheese is salt and fat in a dense block. The wine's acidity rinses it off the palate, and its liquorice-and-spice edge plays the role of the quince paste.
Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Cheese board
Herb-crusted roast lamb
The wine's juniper and bay-leaf spice, the estate's own descriptors for the 2019, bridge straight to rosemary and garlic on a lamb roast.
Try with: Leg of lamb · Rack of lamb · Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce · More pairings →
Porcini and other earthy dishes
Earthy is the word Vivino drinkers use most for this wine. Mushrooms, especially porcini, meet it note for note without needing meat on the plate.
Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Beef wellington
Skip chilli heat and delicate fish
Chilli makes firm tannin taste harder and hotter, and it flattens the aged, delicate notes this wine spends years building. Light seafood gets steamrolled by the tannin instead.
Skip with: Crispy chilli beef · Szechuan beef · Sushi · Oysters · Pairing guide →
Why collectors cellar Biondi-Santi for decades
Biondi-Santi built its name on longevity: the estate still lists every vintage back to 1980 on its own site. Five-star years like 2019 should drink well into the 2040s.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Brunello rules already hold the wine back four years, and this estate's five-star vintages drink well after decades. The 2019 should run to 2050.
£143.99 is the lowest tracked offer for the current vintage and we have no signal of further discounting.

Common Questions
This is the estate that created Brunello: its first vintage was 1888. The wine comes only from Biondi-Santi's own vineyards at Il Greppo, ages for years in cask before release, and critics score recent vintages in the high 90s. Collector demand does the rest.
Give the young five-star years time: the 2019 and 2020 are best from about 2026 and can run 20 years or more. The warmer 2017 already drinks well. Serve at 16 to 18C in a big glass, and give a young bottle a short decant.
Sangiovese, and nothing else, as Brunello rules require. Biondi-Santi grows its own selection of the grape, a clone called BBS11 that the estate identified in its vineyards. All fruit is estate-grown and picked by hand.
The 2017 at £185 is the one to drink soonest. The five-star 2019, around £205, is the safest keeper, and the 2020 sits close by. The 2012 is the mature pick at around £295.
Young, it shows cherry, wild berries, violet and a juniper note, with bright acidity and firm, fine tannin. With age it turns to leather, tobacco and orange peel. On Vivino, 33,000 drinkers average it 4.5 out of 5.
