Why this drive: Brunello is the rare great denomination you can circle before dinner: one hill, one grape, and most of the map visible from the road. The loop strings the enoteca inside Montalcino's fortress, the Romanesque abbey at Sant'Antimo with its own small DOC, and the southern slopes below Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Sant'Angelo in Colle, where estates like Castello Banfi farm the warmest fruit. Tasting north-slope against south-slope Sangiovese, half an hour apart on the same road, is the point of coming.

Sant'Antimo
The Romanesque abbey stands alone in a bowl of olives and vines, and the small Sant'Antimo DOC around it covers the zone's non-Sangiovese wines.

Stop 4 · Lunch above the vines
Sant'Angelo in Colle
A walled hamlet on the south-west shoulder of the hill, looking over the warm slopes where Castello Banfi and Argiano make their Brunello.

The hamlet's trattorie feed the estate crews at lunch; book in season. From here the loop climbs back over the Passo del Lume Spento to Montalcino.

When to go
Vendemmia dust or green May hills
September and October put the vendemmia in the rows and dust on the white roads; May and June give you the green hills without the heat. In high summer start early, because the southern slopes are the warmest corner of the zone and afternoon cellar visits suffer for it. The Benvenuto Brunello preview weekend fills every bed in the village; check the consorzio's dates before booking.

Both estates on this loop with bookable visits, Castello Banfi and Il Valentiano, require booking ahead. The enoteca inside the fortress pours by the glass without an appointment.
Driving notes
Paved if signed, gravel if you shortcut
Paved the whole way round if you follow the signed roads; the direct cut from Castelnuovo dell'Abate to Sant'Angelo in Colle is seven kilometres of strada bianca, fine in a normal car in the dry and best skipped after rain. Montalcino's historic centre is closed to visitor traffic, so park below the fortress and walk in. The loop closes with ten kilometres back over the Passo del Lume Spento from Sant'Angelo in Colle. Fill the tank before you start: the fuel stations sit on the approach roads, not on the loop.

Montalcino's walled centre is closed to non-resident cars. Use the pay car parks below the fortress; everything in the village is within ten minutes on foot.

Yes. The full circuit is about 40 km of driving. Half a day covers the abbey and one booked tasting; a full day adds the southern estates and lunch in Sant'Angelo in Colle.
The signed route is paved. The direct cut through the vineyards is about seven kilometres of strada bianca, driveable in a normal car in dry weather.
A separate small DOC sharing Montalcino's territory, used mostly for wines that fall outside Brunello's Sangiovese-only rules, including the international varieties grown around the abbey.
At the pay car parks below the fortress. The walled centre is closed to visitor cars, and nothing inside is more than ten minutes from the walls on foot.
