Castello di Camigliano is a medieval hamlet on the south-west side of the Montalcino zone. The Ghezzi family has made wine here since 1957. Records from 1278 count about 150 families inside the castle walls. Around 100 hectares of vineyard surround the village and supply its Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso and Toscana IGT wines. Gualtiero Ghezzi runs the estate today with his wife and children, making about 300,000 bottles a year from organic vines. Tours and tastings run most weekdays and end in the old cellar beneath the castle.
Book a visitThe castle here was already a busy place in 1278, when records count around 150 families inside its walls. Camigliano guarded Montalcino's approaches and passed through the orbit of the abbey of Sant'Antimo, then of Siena. Its farming community stayed put through it all. The village symbol is a camel, taken from a thirteenth-century seal. The manor house still stands at the old entry gate, the Borgone, which now gives its name to one of the estate's red wines.
The Ghezzi family bought the estate in 1957. Gualtiero Ghezzi runs it today with his wife Laura and their children, and makes about 300,000 bottles a year. From the late 1980s he replanted the vineyards with vine clones tested at Pisa University. He dug a new cellar under the village and filled it with big French oak casks and concrete vats. The vines sit at 250 to 270 metres on mixed ground: silty sand, clay and fossil-rich patches.
The whole vineyard estate is organic. Legumes grow between alternating rows to feed the soil, and weeds are hoed out rather than sprayed. The cellar is heated with biomass from its own vineyards instead of fossil fuels. Recent vintages of the Brunello are sold as certified organic wines.
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG leads the range, with the Gualto Riserva at the top of the range. Alongside sit Rosso di Montalcino, a Chianti Colli Senesi and a set of Toscana IGT wines: Gamal Vermentino in white, Borgone in red. The estate also presses a Terre di Siena DOP olive oil and distils a grappa from its Brunello grapes.
Visits run Monday to Friday, with weekend tours arranged by phone. The standard wine tour lasts about an hour. It ends with three wines in the ancient cellar under the castle, all stone walls and exposed beams. There is also a two-hour tasting built around pecorino cheeses from nearby Pienza, and a wine brunch. A private tour is led by the winemaker, Michele Turchi. Booking goes through the estate's own enquiry form.
