Tenute Folonari

Tenute Folonari is the six-estate Tuscan group that Ambrogio Folonari and his son Giovanni set up in 2000. The cellar and the tasting rooms are at Tenuta di Nozzole, in Greve in Chianti. From that hill the family also farms Bolgheri, Montalcino, Montepulciano and the Maremma. So a single sitting at Nozzole can run from Chianti Classico to Brunello and Bolgheri reds. Under the barrel cellar sits the group's caveau of older vintages, more than 25,000 bottles drawn from seven Tuscan denominations.

About Tenute Folonari

The Folonari wine story starts a long way from Chianti. Lorenzo Folonari was born in Valtellina in 1729, and he moved the family to Val Camonica. By 1882 his descendants Italo and Francesco had shifted the firm's base to Brescia. In 1911 they bought Ruffino, then known for Chianti Classico shipped in straw-wrapped flasks. The turn towards estate wine came in the 1960s, when Nino Folonari stepped away from volume production and bought land at Greve in Chianti. Tenute del Cabreo came in 1967, Tenuta di Nozzole in 1971. In 2000 his son Ambrogio and his grandson Giovanni founded Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute, around those Greve properties and the estates they went on to add elsewhere in Tuscany.

Tenuta di Nozzole is the address visitors want. The farm is documented from the 1300s and covers 385 hectares, 90 of them vineyard and 15 olive grove. The villa stands on a ridge that climbs from 150 to around 300 metres. Sangiovese leads here, in the estate Chianti Classico, in the La Forra Riserva and in the Gran Selezione bottlings. It is joined by the Le Bruniche Chardonnay vineyard and by two plots of Cabernet Sauvignon that produce Il Pareto. The barrel cellar dates from the 1990s and runs beneath vaulted ceilings. A passage from it leads to the caveau, where more than 25,000 bottles of older vintages from the group's cru wines are held.

Tenute del Cabreo accounts for the Supertuscan half of the range. Zano sits between Greve and the hill village of Montefioralle, on gravel and marl of Pliocene origin. It was here that the family planted the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot clones selected in the early 1970s, after studying French viticulture. Casa di Sala lies higher up at Panzano in Chianti, on white clay and galestro, and carries about 37 acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Cabreo Il Borgo and the La Pietra Chardonnay both come from these vineyards. Two old farm buildings on the Zano estate were converted by the family into guest accommodation.

The coastal and southern estates widen the map. Tenuta Campo al Mare farms about 74 acres of Bolgheri, split into six parcels, each planted to a single variety. Sandy Fornacelle, near the Tyrrhenian, carries the Vermentino. The higher Segalari vineyard gives the Cabernet Franc of Selvante. Baia al Vento comes from Merlot and Gallico from Petit Verdot, alongside the Bolgheri Rosso. At Camigliano, south-west of Montalcino, Tenuta La Fuga has belonged to the family since 2001. It is the smallest holding, with about 24 acres of vineyard and vine age running from about 10 to 30 years. It makes Rosso di Montalcino, the La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino and the Le Due Sorelle Riserva from Sangiovese Grosso.

That adds up to unusual reach under one family name. The range covers Chianti Classico Riserva from Nozzole, the Cabreo pair of Il Borgo and La Pietra, and Il Pareto. It also covers Bolgheri reds and Vermentino from Campo al Mare, and Brunello di Montalcino from La Fuga. Two further estates complete the group. TorCalvano at Montepulciano makes Vino Nobile, and Vigne a Porrona in the Maremma makes Morellino di Scansano and Montecucco Sangiovese.
