About Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi

The Frescobaldi family began producing wine at Tenuta di Castiglioni in the Val di Pesa around 1300. Over the following centuries, the family expanded across Tuscany while maintaining close ties to Florence, where ancestors built the first wooden bridge over the Arno (later rebuilt as Ponte Santa Trinita) and supplied wine to papal courts and the table of Henry VIII. In 1855, a Frescobaldi forebear planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay in Tuscan soil for the first time, decades before international varieties became common in the region. Today the group operates nine core estates, each tied to a specific denomination. Castello Nipozzano, the flagship property 40 minutes east of Florence, produces Chianti Rufina including the single-vineyard Montesodi (100% Sangiovese, first made in 1974) and Mormoreto, a Cabernet-led blend introduced in 1983. Tenuta CastelGiocondo in Montalcino, certified organic since 2015 and among the first four producers of Brunello, anchors the southern end of the portfolio. Castello Pomino, at up to 750 metres altitude, specialises in Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco. More recent additions include Tenuta Perano in Gaiole in Chianti (acquired 2017, the family's first Chianti Classico estate) and Tenuta Calimaia in Montepulciano (acquired 2021), returning the family to a territory where an ancestor served as mayor in 1390. The group also owns Ornellaia and Masseto in Bolgheri. Among the more unusual projects is Gorgona, a white wine made on Europe's only island penitentiary. Inmates work the vineyard under Frescobaldi supervision; none of the participants has reoffended after release.
