Inside Frescobaldi's Pomino Benefizio: citrus, flint and barrel
Grown at 700 metres on sandy Pomino soils and fermented in small oak barrels, Benefizio Riserva opens fresh and stony. Grapefruit, lemon peel and orange blossom lead to a honeyed, savoury close. Half-new oak and ageing on the spent yeast add vanilla and spice without smothering the freshness that altitude gives it.

- Typical of Chardonnay
Benefizio opens fresh and stony. Grapefruit and lemon peel lift into orange blossom and white flowers, the citrus-and-floral mark of this 700-metre Pomino site. Fermenting in small oak barrels adds gentle vanilla and a spiced, mature edge that grows with bottle age.
Fermenting in half-new oak builds a textured, savoury palate of white peach and ripe orchard fruit. So does ageing on the spent yeast, stirred back through the wine. The cool, sandy vineyard keeps the line of acidity taut. It has real structure, yet never feels heavy.
The close is long and savoury. A flinty, stony cut runs through it, with the honeyed note Frescobaldi itself picks out in the aftertaste.
Benefizio is a benchmark single-vineyard Tuscan Chardonnay, and drinkers like it year after year. It sits at the top of Frescobaldi's Pomino range. It rewards both the table now and five to ten years in the cellar.
Buying Pomino Benefizio: vintages and UK pricing
Three vintages are listed in the UK now. The current 2024 and 2023 releases sit around £37 to £46, plus a mature 2014 near £44. All are 75cl, 13.5% Chardonnay from Frescobaldi's Castello Pomino estate.
How Frescobaldi Pomino Benefizio scores for your table
These scores rate Benefizio for food matching, value, cellaring and occasion. A single-vineyard, barrel-aged Tuscan Chardonnay at £37 plus, it leans toward food, the cellar and big occasions over everyday drinking.
Barrel-built body with fresh 700 m acidity matches creamy risotti, vitello tonnato and robust fish. A truly versatile food white.
Italy's first single-vineyard white from a landmark Frescobaldi estate, it carries the pedigree and price for a celebration or a fine-dining table.
Barrel fermentation and ageing on the spent yeast give it a long life. The still-vibrant 2014 shows a ten-year-plus window from a strong vintage.
Easy citrus and honey fruit, but the oak, savoury structure and £37-plus price make it more an enthusiast's white than a first-step bottle.
At a £36.64 UK floor it sits above the typical Pomino DOC white. The single vineyard and the barrel programme justify the premium, but it is no bargain.
Premium pricing above £36 and a cellar-worthy, oak-framed style make this an occasion white rather than a midweek pour.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Pomino Benefizio across 2014, 2023 and 2024
Benefizio rewards cellaring, so vintage matters. The hot 2024 summer, tempered by Pomino's cool 700-metre site, gave a ripe yet fresh wine. The mature 2014 shows how time in barrel and on the spent yeast carries it into honeyed, mature territory.

The cool, rainy 2014 vintage was difficult for Tuscan reds but suited this fresh mountain white. Now mature, it shows the honeyed, spiced tertiary character barrel and lees ageing develop, and is best drunk soon.

Saffron risotto to swordfish: dishes for a barrel-aged Pomino white
Benefizio's barrel-built body and fresh, savoury acidity make it a food wine. It carries creamy saffron and porcini risotti and cuts the richness of vitello tonnato and Alpine fonduta. It also stands up to robust fish like Sicilian swordfish.
Saffron risotto and buttery primi

Sicilian swordfish and Mediterranean seafood

Fried antipasti and fritto
Benefizio's flinty freshness scours the fat from fried antipasti. Its barrel weight gives the pairing enough substance to feel like a proper match.

Fiery chilli heat and sugary desserts
Chilli heat flattens Benefizio's delicate citrus and orange-blossom scents. Sweet desserts out-sugar its dry, savoury palate and leave the wine tasting hollow.

Cellaring Pomino Benefizio Riserva

Common Questions
It is 100% Chardonnay, grown at Frescobaldi's Castello Pomino estate at 700 metres in the Tuscan Apennines. Chardonnay has been planted at Pomino since 1855. Benefizio, created in 1973, was the first single-vineyard white wine in Italy.
Yes. The Chardonnay ferments in small oak barrels, half new and half first-fill. It goes through a partial malolactic fermentation, then ages on its spent yeast, which is stirred back through the wine. This gives gentle vanilla and spice beside the citrus and orange-blossom fruit, without burying the wine's freshness.
Expect grapefruit, lemon peel and orange blossom over a flinty, stony core, with white peach and a honeyed, savoury finish. The 700-metre altitude keeps it fresh and long despite its barrel-aged weight.
Its body and bright acidity suit creamy, savoury dishes: saffron risotto alla Milanese, porcini risotto, vitello tonnato and robust fish such as Sicilian-style swordfish. Serve it at 10 to 12°C in a large white-wine glass.
Yes. Time in barrel and on the spent yeast builds a wine that rewards five to ten years in bottle. Mature vintages such as 2014 are still drinking well. Younger releases like 2023 and 2024 will gain honeyed, spiced depth with time in the cellar.
Current UK listings run from roughly £37 to £46 a bottle for recent vintages. Older vintages such as 2014 sit around £44. That is the top end of Tuscan white wine, a price its single-vineyard pedigree explains.
