Why this drive: Nowhere else in Italy packs this much fine wine into a beach road: Sassicaia and Ornellaia grew up between the SS1 and the sea, and the same day of driving adds a walled DOCG village and an Etruscan city. Drive it for the range: cult Cabernet under Bolgheri's cypresses in the morning, Suvereto's quieter cellars after lunch, tombs above the water before dinner.

The cypress avenue Carducci wrote about runs dead straight from the Oratorio di San Guido to the village arch, with Sassicaia's home vineyards off the seaward side.

Stop 2 · The balcony town

Castagneto Carducci

The hilltop capital of the commune, its belvedere looking down across the whole Bolgheri vineyard plain to the sea.

The village took the poet's name in 1907. Caccia al Piano 1868's cellar door sits on the road back towards Bolgheri, visits booked ahead.

Stop 3 · The walled DOCG

Suvereto

A walled medieval village with a DOCG of its own, where Sangiovese and Cabernet carry Bolgheri ambitions without Bolgheri prices.

The road from Castagneto winds through Sassetta's woods. Petra's Mario Botta-designed winery is ten minutes from the walls, and the Val di Cornia denomination shares these hills.

Stop 4 · Etruscans above the sea

Populonia

An Etruscan acropolis above the Gulf of Baratti, the only Etruscan city founded directly on the sea, closing the route at its southern end.

The necropolis car park at Baratti fills fast in summer. Val di Cornia vines run close to the archaeological park; finish with a swim off the Baratti beach if the light holds.

For the estates, yes: Tenuta San Guido, Ornellaia and their neighbours receive by appointment. The enoteche on Bolgheri's village street pour the same names by the glass without one.

Yes, it is a public road from the Oratorio di San Guido up to the village arch, where cars stop. In season expect to roll it at walking pace behind cyclists and photographers.

One full day covers Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, Suvereto and Populonia at a wine pace. A second day earns the Baratti beaches and the archaeological park rather than more cellars.

Italy's only single-estate DOC, carved out for Tenuta San Guido's Sassicaia in 2013 after decades as the subzone of Bolgheri DOC. One wine, one estate, its own appellation.

At the pay lots below the arch, because the single village street is closed to cars. The Viale dei Cipressi up to it is a public road, driven at walking pace in season behind cyclists and photographers.

The acropolis above the water and the Etruscan necropolis at Baratti below it, together the Parco Archeologico di Baratti e Populonia. Hours are seasonal, so check before building the afternoon around it.
