Caccia al Piano 1868 sits on the Via Bolgherese at Castagneto Carducci, a Bolgheri estate where limestone and clay soils and a breeze off the Tyrrhenian shape Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. It is owned by the Ziliani family of Franciacorta's Guido Berlucchi, who bought the property in 2003 and work four coastal crus around the San Biagio hill. The cellar opens by appointment for booked tastings of the estate's Bolgheri DOC reds and white and its Metodo Classico rose.

About Caccia al Piano 1868
The name records a hunt. Caccia al Piano takes its 1868 from an old shooting preserve of the Della Gherardesca counts, whose lodge was later rebuilt into the cellar and offices that stand today on the Via Bolgherese, the vine-and-olive road that runs inland from the village of Bolgheri through the commune of Castagneto Carducci. The estate's modern emblem borrows the figure of Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, a nod to that older life of the land.
The wine estate itself is a twenty-first-century project. Franco Ziliani, owner of Guido Berlucchi and one of the people who brought Metodo Classico sparkling wine to Franciacorta in the early 1960s, bought Tenuta Caccia al Piano in 2003 after walking the San Biagio vineyard and its view over the Tyrrhenian. Bolgheri was still a young appellation, made famous from the 1970s by a handful of far-sighted growers, and Ziliani set out to add a serious red to that company. The estate belongs to the Berlucchi group but stands as its own Bolgheri house, and Ziliani's children, Cristina, Arturo and Paolo, now carry the work forward.
Around thirty hectares sit under the estate, twenty-seven of them planted, divided into four crus: San Biagio, Grottine, Cantina and Le Bozze. The soils are the limestone and clay that Bolgheri growers prize, worked under a warm Mediterranean climate softened by the nearby coast, with vines that now average between eighteen and twenty-seven years old. Reds come from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, while the whites lean on Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc. A cellar completed in 2014 handles a yearly output of roughly 140,000 bottles, and the estate is a member of the Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini Bolgheri DOC.
The range reads as a tour of Bolgheri in miniature. Ruit Hora, a Bolgheri DOC Rosso first made in 2001, blends the estate's four red grapes and is the house's everyday statement of quality, while the flagship Caccia al Piano Bolgheri Superiore draws Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from San Biagio and has taken scores in the mid-nineties from Decanter, James Suckling and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Lungocosta is a small-production Bolgheri Bianco of Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc rested in fine-grained oak, and Levia is a Toscana IGT rosato of Merlot and Syrah named for the colour of a Bolgheri sunset. A Metodo Classico rose of Syrah and Merlot, the first sparkling wine made in Bolgheri, ties the estate back to its Franciacorta roots.
The cellar receives visitors by appointment. Bookable tastings run from a ninety-minute Classic flight through a vintage-focused vertical of the Superiore to a longer Gourmand session that sets the wines against Tuscan cooking, with a wine shop open on set days across the year. Tours and tastings are arranged in advance, and can be run in Spanish and Portuguese on request.
