Tua Rita is a family estate at Suvereto, in the hills behind the Tuscan coast south of Bolgheri. Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti bought a small plot of vines in 1984 and named the estate after Rita, surname first. It is best known for Redigaffi, a pure Merlot first made in 1994. The vineyards now cover around 60 hectares, about 85 football pitches, and the family makes about 300,000 bottles a year. Visitors can book tastings, cellar tours, a Jeep picnic and a horseback tour through the vines.
Book a visitRita Tua and her husband Virgilio Bisti were not looking to make wine in 1984. They bought a small property on the Notri hills outside Suvereto as a place to live close to the land. The vines that came with it changed that. The couple farmed them with a care the family still talks about: at the end of each day they walked the rows to check every last leaf. The estate took Rita's name, turned round. Its vines grew from about three football pitches to 13 within ten years, 28 by the early 2000s and around 85 today.
The first wine was Giusto di Notri, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in 1992. Two years later the couple bottled one parcel of Merlot on its own and called it Redigaffi. It became one of Italy's best-known Merlots. Robert Parker called it an icon of Italian wine, and the fine-wine exchange Liv-ex lists it among Italy's leading labels. Per Sempre, a Syrah, and Giusto di Notri sit beside it at the top of the range. Rosso dei Notri, Perlato del Bosco and Palazzetto are the more affordable reds. Lodano Bianco, Keir Ansonica and Perlato del Bosco Bianco are the whites, and Sese is a sweet Passito di Pantelleria made from Sicilian grapes.
Suvereto sits in the Val di Cornia, between the sea and the Colline Metallifere, and its vineyards lie between 100 and 380 metres up. The ground at Tua Rita is stony, a mix of clay, silt and sand, with a sea breeze from the north-west. The family says that stony ground shows up as an iron-like note and a salty edge in the wines. Vines are planted close together and picked by hand into small crates. The reds ferment in wooden vats, stay on their skins for 25 to 30 days, and then spend at least a year in barrique. The barrel cellar has a vaulted concrete ceiling. One end wall is painted floor to ceiling by Raffaele De Rosa, the Livorno artist who also paints the Redigaffi labels.
Virgilio died in 2010. Rita still owns the estate with her daughter Simena Bisti, who manages it, Simena's husband Stefano Frascolla, its director, and their son Giovanni, the third generation. In August 2023 the estate gained Equalitas certification, the Italian sustainability standard for wine. In August 2026 the DoctorWine guide, edited by Daniele Cernilli, named Tua Rita its Winery of the Year for 2027. Visitors can book six experiences on the estate's website. They run from a 90-minute cellar tour with five wines to a Jeep ride through the vines with a picnic, and a three-hour tour on horseback.
