Tenuta Di Vaira is a family winery near Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast south of Livorno. The Di Vaira family came here from Molise in the 1950s. Vincenzo Di Vaira runs it today with his wife Emanuela, their daughter Romina and her husband Alessandro. They make Bolgheri red, white and rosé wines, plus olive oil and grappa. The winery is open Monday to Saturday all year round. You can drop in for a glass without booking, or book a guided tour with a tasting.
The Di Vaira family came to Bolgheri from Molise in the 1950s. They settled on the Via Bolgherese, the road that runs along the foot of the hills. Vincenzo Di Vaira leads the family today. He spent part of his youth at Podere Le Mandrie, a farmhouse built in 1898 a short walk from the winery. He chose to build the estate's future on its vines. His wife Emanuela works with him, and so does the third generation: their daughter Romina and her husband Alessandro. In 2021 the family opened a new winery. Every step now happens there, from pressing the grapes to putting on the labels.
The vines grow in three places, and each one shapes the wine in its own way. The main block sits around the winery, on loose ground full of sand and pebbles that drains fast. A small plot at Grattamacco, on the first slopes, has more clay and gravel. It gives the family's biggest reds, the ones that last longest. Another small plot lies by the Via Aurelia, closer to the sea, where sandy soil and sea breezes keep the grapes fresh. All three lie inside the Bolgheri DOC, which takes in farmland around the town of Castagneto Carducci.
The family makes two main ranges. Caccia al Palazzo is the young, fresh line: a Vermentino white, a rosé and a red, kept in steel or concrete tanks rather than wood. Notti di Luna is a second white, rosé and red, each aged in French oak barriques. The top red is Bolgherese, a Bolgheri Rosso Superiore made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It spends 18 months in oak, and the family says it will age for more than ten years. Le Ballerine is a young, fruity red sold as Costa Toscana IGT. Cioccaie is a set of three reds, each from a single grape: Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Vinum, a Swiss wine magazine, gave the 2022 Bolgherese 93 points and the 2019 Cioccaie Cabernet Franc 94 in its 2025 Tuscany special.
Visitors are welcome from Monday to Saturday, all year round. The guided tour runs in Italian or English. It takes in the vines, the room where the wine ferments, the barrel cellar and a tasting room with a wide view. Each glass comes with bread and the estate's own olive oil. You can also call in without booking for a glass or a quick tasting in the shop. In the warm months the family sets out picnics among the vines.
The family also rents out holiday homes. Podere Cafaggio is a stone farmhouse with a pool at Monteverdi Marittimo, in the hills inland. Mia Margot is a flat near the old centre of Castagneto Carducci, and Acquamarina is an apartment by the sea. Every stay comes with a free visit and tasting at the winery.

Tenuta Di Vaira's current bottle selection is led by Bolgheri DOC. The clearest grape signal comes from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
