Tenuta Fanti sits at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the southern slopes of Montalcino, looking across at the abbey of Sant'Antimo. The Fanti family has owned the land since the early 1800s. Filippo Fanti turned the old sharecropping farm into a winery in the 1970s, and his daughter Elisa runs it with him today. Brunello di Montalcino is the wine, from 50 hectares of vines, with 8,000 olive trees alongside. Tastings and cellar tours run every day, and lunch with the wines can be booked.
Book a visitThe Fanti have farmed at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, a village on the south side of Montalcino, since the early 1800s. For most of that time it was a sharecropping farm. Filippo Fanti changed that in the early 1970s, when he started making wine under the family name. The first Brunello di Montalcino left the cellar in 1980.
His daughter Elisa joined him full time in 2007, after a degree in agronomy, and the two run the estate together. A new cellar went up in 2004. The wines now sell in more than 30 countries, and the 2001 Brunello was placed 23rd in Wine Spectator's top 100 of 2006.
The estate covers 200 hectares. Fifty of them are vines, 30 are olive groves with 8,000 trees, and the rest is cropland and woods. The house wines are Brunello di Montalcino, its Riserva from the Vigna Le Macchiarelle plot, the Vallocchio Brunello and a Rosso di Montalcino. From the vineyards you look straight across at the Romanesque abbey of Sant'Antimo. The olive oil comes from the estate's own trees, and a Vin Santo ages in small barrels in the cellar.
Visitors are welcome every day, from nine to six on weekdays and Saturdays and from ten on Sundays, and the family asks you to book. The standard visit is a tour of the winery with the white, the rosé and three reds, Brunello di Montalcino among them, plus the estate's olive oil. The Sanguis Jovis tasting adds older Brunello vintages side by side. Lunch with the wines, with Montalcino dishes from the estate's cooks, is by reservation only. The tasting room looks out over the olive groves, and there is a charging point for electric cars.
