Spolert Winery is a small artisan cellar at Prepotto, the Colli Orientali village that Schioppettino calls home. The vines are all around the winery. Schioppettino is the grape the estate builds everything on, with Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia alongside. Tastings are informal, taken at the bar or in the garden looking over the hills, and come with local ham and cheese. There are picnics in the vines, cooking classes, walks and e-bikes too. Rooms sit among the vineyards, and the cellar opens seven days a week.
Prepotto is the village that Schioppettino belongs to more than anywhere else, and Spolert puts the grape at the centre of everything it does. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana and Merlot make up the rest of the story. The winery sits among its own rows on the Prepotto hills, at the eastern edge of the Colli Orientali. Its garden looks out over them.
The winemaking is hands-off by design. In the vineyard the team watches and steps in only when it has to. In the cellar the wine is guided rather than pushed, and time does the rest. The estate says it plainly: no two wines are copies, only different expressions of one place.
Two ranges come out of that. The Millennial line is fresh and made in concrete tanks. It holds Friulano, Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla and Schioppettino, all Friuli Colli Orientali DOC, plus a sparkling Ribolla Gialla called Mirandolina. The Premium and Anfora line goes deeper. A Chardonnay and a copper-tinted Pinot Grigio age in clay amphorae. The Schioppettino di Prepotto called Peper ages in large oak, and a Merlot called Zirlo in small barrels.
Visiting is easy and unbuttoned. The cellar opens every day. The tastings pour three or five wines at the bar, with a board of Friulian cured meats and cheeses. A picnic basket takes you out into the rows or the garden. There are four-hour cooking classes on frico and carbonara, and a three-hour walk through the Bosco Romagno woods that ends with a tasting. You can hire an e-bike for the hills, or take a day out to San Daniele to see prosciutto made.
You can stay too. The estate's rooms are simple and well kept, in wood and terracotta, each with its own bathroom and a view over the vineyards. They are booked online. The cellar is a short walk from the rooms, so a tasting needs no driving at all.
