Castello di Buttrio is a wine estate, hotel and osteria on the Pampinutta hill at Buttrio, in the Colli Orientali east of Udine. Marco Felluga bought the castle and its old vineyards in 1994, and his daughter Alessandra runs it today, with his granddaughters alongside her. About 14 football pitches of vines planted around 1940 ring the castle, mostly native grapes. Four tastings can be booked online, from a one-hour introduction to a Sauvignon vertical. You can also sleep in the castle or the farmhouse below it, and eat at the osteria.
A castle was first raised on the Pampinutta hill in the eleventh century. That one was destroyed, and the castle you see was rebuilt in 1600. It passed through the lords of Buttrio and the Morpurgo barons before Marco Felluga bought it in 1994, with the vineyards around it. Alessandra Felluga, his daughter and the fifth generation of the family to make wine, leads the estate now, with the next generation of the family alongside her.
The old vines are the point. About ten hectares around the castle were planted around 1940 with Friulano, Merlot, Verduzzo, Malvasia and Ribolla, and the family kept them rather than pulling them out. Yields are low, some plots are still hoed by hand, and the grapes come in by the small crate. The hill has grown vines since the Middle Ages.
The whites lean on native grapes, Friulano and Ribolla Gialla first. The reds are Merlot and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, and the Riserve sit at the top of the range. Look at the labels: the woven pattern behind the drawing of the castle comes from Friulian textile tradition. It was chosen after rooms for drying silkworms turned up in the castle during the restoration.
The four tastings differ in length and depth. The one-hour introduction pours three wines after a short history of the family and the hills, for groups of two to twenty-five. A ninety-minute private tasting in the castle itself adds food and takes up to eight. The Reserves tasting lasts an hour and a quarter, and a Sauvignon vertical of four vintages an hour and a half. All can be cancelled free up to a day before.
You can stay. The hotel is in the castle at the top of the hill. Its wooden staircase came from an early 1900s Trieste cruise ship, was fitted into the castle in the Morpurgo barons' time, and has recently been restored. The farmhouse Tra Le Vigne sits at the foot of the hill, with rooms of 25 to 35 square metres looking onto the vines. The Osteria al Castello serves seasonal Friulian dishes with the estate's wines, Friulano by the glass to start.

Tasting & Tour
An experience dedicated to the highest qualitative expression of Castello di Buttrio: the Reserves signed by Alessandra Felluga. The visit begins with the story of the family and the territory, then continues inside the winery, where wines of great identity take shape. This tasting represents a true journey into the “liquid geography” of the estate: each wine is born from a careful selection of grapes, where soil, exposure, and microclimate express themselves in a unique way. The grapes destined for the Reserves come exclusively from the best plots and are vinified only in the most suitable vintages. The three wines in the tasting – two whites and one red – tell of an attentive and rigorous production philosophy, made of selection, time, and respect for the territory. Each glass is accompanied by an in-depth narrative, to grasp the nuances, complexity, and elegance of these labels of excellence.

Tasting
A fascinating journey dedicated to Sauvignon, one of the estate's signature grape varieties, through a vertical tasting of four vintages. The experience begins with the story of the terroir and the Felluga family, followed by a tour of the winemaking facilities. Finally, you reach the evocative tasting room at the top of the winery's tower, which offers a privileged view of the surrounding vineyards. This is where the tasting comes to life: a journey through time across four different vintages, each capable of expressing the unique characteristics of the season in which it was produced. From the freshest and most vibrant notes of the young vintages to the complexity and depth of the more mature ones, the Sauvignon reveals all its facets. An engaging and educational experience, designed to understand how climate, harvest, and aging can uniquely influence the expression of the same grape variety.
