Cusumano is a family winery based at Partinico, on the plain of western Sicily, among the white tufa soils inland from Trapani. Its headquarters is the Tenuta San Carlo estate. Brothers Diego and Alberto Cusumano founded the business in 2001. The family now farms more than 500 hectares across six estates, from western Sicily to Mount Etna. That is about 700 football pitches of land. Every bottle in the range carries the SOStain Sicilia sustainability badge on the back label.
Book a visitThe story starts with two brothers and a plan for a Sicilian mosaic. Diego and Alberto Cusumano took over from their father Francesco in 2001. Rather than run one central farm, they built the business as a network of single estates. Today the land spans Tenuta San Carlo at Partinico and Tenuta Ficuzza at Piana degli Albanesi, which sits at 700 metres. Tenuta San Giacomo is at Butera in central Sicily. Tenuta Presti e Pegni and Tenuta Monte Pietroso sit at Monreale, and Alta Mora is on Etna.
Each estate has its own grape and its own wine. Sàgana, the family's most awarded Nero d'Avola, grows on white tufa soils at Tenuta San Giacomo in the Butera hills. Noà, a Bordeaux-style blend of Nero d'Avola, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, grows at Tenuta Presti e Pegni outside Monreale. Angimbé, a white from Insolia and Chardonnay, sits on stony soils higher up. 700slm, the estate's Brut Metodo Classico sparkling wine, comes from Ficuzza at exactly 700 metres above sea level. A single-vineyard Moscato dello Zucco revives an old western Sicilian tradition.
The Etna chapter opened in 2013, when the brothers bought three contrade on the volcano's northern flank under the Alta Mora name. The cellar there is built underground and runs on biomass energy. The grapes are picked by hand, moved without pumps, and made into wine without added yeast. Guardiola, Feudo di Mezzo, Pietramarina, Solicchiata and Verzella each anchor a different Etna Rosso, Rosato or Bianco DOC bottling. Nerello Mascalese and Carricante drive them.
Sustainability sits at the centre of it all. Cusumano belongs to SOStain Sicilia, a Sicilian scheme that checks its member wineries. The checks cover renewable energy, winter cover crops that protect biodiversity, and low total sulphur in the finished wine. Members must also publish a sustainability report every year. The double badge comes from a partnership with V.I.V.A. Sustainable Wine. It appears on the back label of every bottle.
Two pours sum up modern Sicily here: a Sàgana from Butera, then an Alta Mora Guardiola from the north side of Etna. They cover the island's two most important styles. Few Sicilian estates hold both the white soils of the interior and the black volcanic slopes under one family.

Cusumano's current bottle selection is led by Sicilia DOC. The clearest grape signal comes from Nero d'Avola and Chardonnay.
