Orestiadi Vini, best known by its label name Tenute Orestiadi, makes wine in Gibellina, a western Sicilian town rebuilt as an open-air gallery of modern art after the 1968 Belice earthquake. The estate farms two corners of the island: warm inland hills around Gibellina, and terraced lava soil high on Mount Etna. Its cellar doubles as a contemporary art museum, and tastings book directly on the winery's own site.
Gibellina is not an ordinary wine town. An earthquake flattened it in 1968, and its mayor Ludovico Corrao rebuilt it as a living gallery of modern art. Alberto Burri sealed the old ruins under white concrete, the vast work known as the Grande Cretto. In 2008 the town's arts foundation and Cantine Ermes, one of Sicily's biggest wine co-operatives, founded this winery together. They named it after the town's Orestiadi arts festival. Wine pays for art here: a share of every bottle's value funds the foundation's programme.
The cellar on Via Goethe carries the same idea inside. The barrel hall houses the Barriques Museum, a permanent art collection built with Milan's Brera academy. Resident artists paint the barrels themselves. The guided tastings are named after the men who rebuilt the town: Burri, Consagra and Quaroni. Gibellina itself holds the title of Italy's first Capital of Contemporary Art for 2026.
The home vineyards sit in the Belice valley, in Sicily's warm western hills. The estate works three local soils and matches each one to a grape family. Red sandy ground suits Perricone. Dark inland soil holds water through the dry summer and carries Nero d'Avola and Syrah. White limestone hills grow the island's native whites: Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia and Zibibbo.
A second estate, La Gelsomina, farms 15 hectares on Mount Etna at 550 metres, in the hamlet of Presa near Piedimonte Etneo. The plots step down the volcano in terraces shaped like a theatre. Black lava grit, which locals call gghiara, feeds Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante and Moscato. From Carricante the estate also makes Petramater, a sparkling wine refermented in the bottle.
The range on this site runs to more than 25 wines. Most are Terre Siciliane IGT or Sicilia DOC, with one aged Marsala Vergine. The two Riserva wines, Il Bianco di Ludovico and Il Rosso di Ludovico, honour Corrao by name. Cellar-door prices start around eight euro a bottle, so this is Sicilian character without a collector's price tag.
