Tasting Notes

What Tenute Orestiadi's Adeni Perricone tastes like

Red berries, wild forest fruit and black pepper over a soft, fruity body. Tenute Orestiadi picks its Perricone by hand into small crates at the end of August. The wine then rests about eight months in steel tanks and at least ten months in bottle.

Nose

Bright, deep purple in the glass. Red berries lead, with black pepper and the herbs of Mediterranean scrubland behind them. Tenute Orestiadi's own note calls it fresh and floral. Across vintages, drinkers pick out dark and red fruit first, then pepper and liquorice.

Palate

Soft and fruity, with dense wild-berry flavour and an elegant feel. There is real grip behind the fruit: Falstaff called the 2022 "concentrated and full-bodied", with "grippy tannins". The wine rests about eight months in steel tanks and at least ten months in bottle before it is sold.

Finish

Long and sumptuous, as the producer's own note puts it. With more time in bottle, a note of liquorice comes through.

Overall

Adeni is the Perricone of Tenute Orestiadi's La Selezione range, renamed in 2023 with a word from the Sabir language. Drinkers rate it well and like its mix of dark fruit and spice. Drink the 2024 from 2026 to 2029, with lamb, red meat or a baked pasta.

Four UK shops on this page sell the 2024 in 75 cl, from £10.50 to £18.28. The gap is shop pricing on the same wine. The 2021 is sold here as a 1.5 litre magnum at £32, so it is not part of that range.

Wine fit score

Where Adeni Perricone fits: food and value first

Its strongest cards are Food and Value. Soft fruit, pepper and real tannin suit lamb, red meat and pasta with a ragù, and the 2024 costs less than most Sicilia DOC reds.

Best value 8.6/10

The 2024 sells from £10.50 to £18.28 for 75 cl, and three of the four shops ask £16 or less. That is below what most Sicilia DOC reds cost in the UK, for a wine Falstaff scored 92 in the 2022 vintage.

Best with food 8.4/10

Soft red-berry fruit, pepper and spice with real tannin: made for lamb, red meat, game and pasta with a meat ragù, the dishes its producer names. Raw fish and hot curries are the misses.

Best everyday bottle 7.4/10

From £10.50, soft and fruity, and happy with a midweek ragù or lamb chops. The 14% alcohol asks for food beside it, and the dearer shops push it out of the everyday bracket.

Best intro to this style 7.0/10

Soft, fruity and peppery, so it is easy to like. The grape is the hurdle: Perricone is an old Sicilian variety the producer set out to revive, so the name may be new to many buyers.

Best for an occasion 4.5/10

An old Sicilian grape from a winery tied to Gibellina's art story makes a good talking point, and the 2021 magnum suits a bigger table. It is still a mid-priced Sicilia DOC, not a showpiece.

Best for cellar 3.8/10

Matured in steel and bottle, it is made to drink within a few years of release. Open the 2024 by 2029 and the 2021 magnum by 2028.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Adeni in 2024 and 2021: a drought year and a hot summer

Sicily's 2024 was a drought year from winter on. The crop came in about a fifth below average, with bigger losses in the west, but grape quality was high. The 2021 brought heat spikes in July and August and very healthy grapes, and Falstaff scored the 2021 Adeni 90 points.

Tenute Orestiadi was founded in 2008 in Gibellina, the Belìce Valley town that became an open-air art museum after the 1968 earthquake. Adeni is its Perricone, an old Sicilian grape also called Pignatello. Falstaff scored the 2022 at 92 points, and the 2021 and 2019 at 90.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Sicilia is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Picked by hand into small crates at the end of August

    Cost up

Tenute Orestiadi hand-picks the Perricone into small crates, then destems it gently to keep the skins whole. Hand picking takes far more labour than a machine harvest, and that cost sits in every bottle.

  2. 02

About eight months in steel tanks, then at least ten months in bottle before release

    Cost up

The wine waits roughly a year and a half between harvest and sale: about eight months in tanks and at least ten in bottle. That is stock the producer has paid for but cannot yet sell.

  3. 03

Matured in steel tanks and bottle, the only vessels the producer names

    Cost down

The producer's method names only steel tanks and bottle for maturing this wine. That avoids the cost of new oak barrels, which an oak-aged red has to carry in its price.

    Cost down

The same 2024 in 75 cl sells at four UK shops here, from £10.50 to £18.28. The gap is shop pricing and delivery terms, not a different wine, so comparing pays.

UK alcohol duty and VAT inside the price

    Cost up

At 14%, a 75 cl bottle pays about £3.22 in duty. With VAT, about £4.97 of the £10.50 bottle is tax, and about £6.27 of the £18.28 bottle. Duty is fixed, so it weighs most on the cheapest offer.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Lamb, ragù and Sicilian tomato dishes for Adeni Perricone

Tenute Orestiadi pairs its Perricone with red meat, game, lamb chops and involtini, and also with stewed fish and fresh cheese. The pepper and spice meet a rich meat sauce, and the tannin softens against lamb fat.

Tannin softening Strong match

Lamb chops and grilled red meat

The tannin in this Perricone grips the protein and fat in lamb and steak, and the wine turns softer and juicier. Lamb chops are one of the dishes Tenute Orestiadi names for it. Its peppery side also suits the char from a grill.

Try with: Lamb chops · Rack of lamb · Ribeye steak · Leg of lamb · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Baked pasta and meat ragù

A rich ragù and this Sicilian red weigh about the same, so neither drowns the other. The wild-berry fruit and black pepper lift a slow-cooked meat sauce. Anelletti al forno, Sicily's own baked pasta, keeps the match close to home.

Try with: Anelletti al forno · Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Game and slow-cooked stews

Black pepper and Mediterranean herbs in the wine echo the herbs and spice in a game stew. Tenute Orestiadi suggests game with this Perricone, and venison or rabbit show why. The soft fruit keeps a dark, rich sauce from feeling heavy.

Try with: Venison Stew · Beef stew · Roast Pheasant · Coniglio alla ligure

Acidity matching Good match

Tomato dishes from Sicily

The acidity in this Perricone matches the sharpness of tomato, so the sauce does not make the wine taste flat. Pasta alla Norma and swordfish in a Sicilian tomato sauce keep the bottle on its home island. The producer also suggests stewed fish with it.

Try with: Pasta alla Norma · Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Sfincione, Sicilian Pizza · Pizza Margherita · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fresh and melted cheese

Tannin and acidity cut through the creaminess of fresh and melted cheese, and the red fruit stays bright against it. Fresh cheese is one of the producer's own suggestions. Arancini and caciocavallo bring the pairing back to Sicily.

Try with: Caciocavallo farcito · Insalata Caprese · Arancini · Cheese board · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot curries, sweet sauces and raw seafood

Chilli heat makes the tannin taste harsh and the 14% alcohol burn, so a madras fights this wine. Sweet sauces strip out its fruit. Raw fish and oysters turn metallic next to red-wine tannin: pick a crisp, dry Sicilian white such as a Grillo instead.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Szechuan chicken · Sweet and sour pork · Nigiri Sushi · Oysters · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Adeni is the name Tenute Orestiadi gave its Perricone Sicilia DOC in 2023, when the six single-grape wines of its La Selezione range took names from the Sabir language. It is made from Perricone alone by a winery founded in 2008 in Gibellina, in the province of Trapani.

It is a soft, fruity red with red berries and wild forest fruit, hints of black pepper and Mediterranean herbs, and a long finish. The colour is a bright, deep purple. The 2024 is 14% alcohol.

Perricone is an old red grape of Sicily, also called Pignatello. DNA work shows Sangiovese is one of its parents; the other is unknown. Tenute Orestiadi says the name Pignatello comes from the pignate, Sicilian pots made from the same red earth the vines grow in.

Drink the 2024 from 2026 to 2029, and open the 2021, sold here as a magnum, by 2028. The wine already spends about eight months in steel tanks and at least ten months in bottle before release.

Four UK shops on this page sell the 2024 in 75 cl, from £10.50 to £18.28. One of them also has the 2021 as a 1.5 litre magnum at £32. Another offers a lower price per bottle when you mix 12 or more.

Lamb chops, red meat, game and pasta with a meat ragù, which are the dishes Tenute Orestiadi suggests. It also works with fish stewed in tomato and with fresh cheese. Avoid hot curries and raw fish.
