Why this drive: Puglia's reds get the headlines; this valley is where its whites live. Verdeca and Bianco d'Alessano grow between actual trulli, and the drive strings five towns twenty minutes apart: UNESCO Alberobello, wine-first Locorotondo, Baroque Martina Franca, grill-smoke Cisternino and white-walled Ostuni. You can taste the whole white side of the region and still be at a masseria pool by six.

Stop 1 · Trulli first, wine after

Alberobello

The UNESCO trulli capital: two whole districts of limestone cones, best before the coaches arrive at ten.

Rione Monti holds the souvenir cones, Aia Piccola the lived-in ones. Coffee on the belvedere above, then out before the heat: the wine is down the road.

Stop 2 · The wine-first town

Locorotondo

The valley's wine capital: a circular white centro above its own DOC, whose Verdeca-led whites carry the town's name.

What to taste here

  • LocorotondoDOC Lean, saline whites; the co-op counter pours without a booking
  • Bianco d'Alessano Verdeca's blending partner, bottled alone by the brave

Cantina del Locorotondo, the 1932 co-op on the main road, pours the benchmark bottling at a walk-in counter. The pitched cummerse roofs here are the local answer to the trullo: same stone, different town.

Stop 3 · Baroque and capocollo

Martina Franca

Baroque palazzi and the valley's grandest passeggiata, with the Martina Franca DOC's Verdeca in the hills around.

Bombette, pork rolls straight off the butcher's grill, are the street dinner. The Festival della Valle d'Itria stages opera in the ducal palace courtyard from late July.

Stop 4 · Choose your meat at the counter

Cisternino

One of the borghi più belli, where the butchers double as grill restaurants: pick the meat, take a table, order the local white.

  • Primitivo The inland red that follows the meat

Fornello pronto works best after dark, when the alleys cool. The belvedere on Via Basiliani looks across the whole valley's trulli field.

Arrosteria del Vicoletto. Via Giulio II 26, a Demola family butcher since 1927: choose the meat at the counter and it comes back off the charcoal.

Stop 5 · The white city finish

Ostuni

ZTL city, see the driving notes

The white city on its hill above the olive plain, with a small DOC of its own and the sea in sight.

What to taste here

  • OstuniDOC A rare local DOC led by Impigno and Francavilla
  • Ottavianello Ostuni's own light red, Cinsault by another name

Ostuni DOC whites and the rare red Ottavianello pour in the old town's enoteche. Climb to the cathedral at golden hour, then dinner in the lanes; the coast at Torre Pozzelle is twenty minutes on.

Osteria del Tempo Perso. Via Gaetano Tanzarella Vitale 47, two cave rooms in the old town, cooking the region's standards since 1983.

Itria Valley Whites, answered

Verdeca and Bianco d'Alessano, the backbone of the Locorotondo and Martina Franca denominations, plus the aromatic Fiano Minutolo. Expect lean, saline whites built for the region's raw seafood and grilled meat.

One day covers Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Cisternino comfortably; they sit ten to fifteen minutes apart. Ostuni deserves the evening, which is what turns the loop into two days.

Yes: the co-op counters, led by Cantina del Locorotondo, and the enoteche in Locorotondo and Ostuni pour without one. Estate visits, including Tagaro, need booking.

Thumb-sized rolls of pork wrapped around cheese, cooked upright over charcoal in the fornello, the butcher's own oven. Cisternino is their capital: you choose the meat at the counter and eat it at the butcher's tables.

At the signed lots outside each centro storico. The old centres are trulli-tight, Martina Franca and Ostuni restrict theirs in season, and nothing is more than a few minutes' walk from the walls.

From late July into early August, when Martina Franca fills with opera. It is the one stretch of summer when beds in the valley need booking well ahead even midweek.
