Feudi Salentini

Feudi Salentini is a wine producer at Leporano, on the Ionian coast just south of Taranto. It is not a single walled estate. It draws grapes from across Salento, the hot, dry heel of Italy, so each grape has its own ground. Primitivo grows as low bushes on chalky soils around Manduria, and the Negroamaro grows in the Salice Salentino and Brindisi zones. The range rests on the area's four home grapes: Primitivo, Negroamaro, Verdeca and Malvasia bianca. The best-known label is Collezione 53, an old-vine Primitivo di Manduria.

About Feudi Salentini

Feudi Salentini works from Leporano, a small coastal town just south of Taranto. The company is not a single walled estate. It draws grapes from right across Salento, the plateau at the southern tip of Puglia. That reach gives it a foothold in every major Puglian appellation south of the Murge.

Each grape has its own ground. Primitivo grows around Manduria, on white chalky soils a short way inland. Negroamaro comes from the Salice Salentino and Brindisi zones. Verdeca and Malvasia bianca sit on lighter soils further from the sea. Some vineyards stand a few kilometres from the Ionian; others lie well back from the coast.

The flagship is Collezione 53, an old-vine Primitivo di Manduria. It shows the heat-baked style that drove the recent UK boom in Puglian reds. Expect concentrated black fruit and a round, near-port sweetness that comes from fermenting very ripe grapes.

Around it sit two Negroamaro labels, Begro and Sassirossi, and a white led by Verdeca for fresher food matches.

In the vineyard the company follows local tradition. Primitivo grows as low alberello bushes kept to small crops, the old Puglian way. The cooler white grapes grow in wire-trained rows.
