L'Archetipo

L'Archetipo is the Dibenedetto family's estate on the Castellaneta plateau in Puglia. Four Dibenedetto brothers and sisters work here with their parents, Francesco Valentino and Anna Maria. Carlo Dibenedetto Sr opened the first furrow here in 1970, and bottling began in 1990. The wines come from synergistic agriculture, a farming method shaped by Masanobu Fukuoka: no ploughing, no man-made chemicals, no lab yeasts. Since 2013 the family has revived old Apulian grapes such as Susumaniello and Marchione. Most wines carry the Salento or Puglia IGT label, led by Primitivo Mistico.

About L'Archetipo

Carlo Dibenedetto Sr opened the estate's first furrow in 1970, in the San Giorgio district. This is the gravel plateau between Castellaneta and the Ionian coast. For two decades the family sold its grapes and wine in bulk. Bottling began in 1990. From that point on, the family's work carried a name of its own.

His son Francesco Valentino trained as an agronomist. He began converting the vineyards to organic farming in the 1980s. He read the work of Rudolf Steiner and moved to biodynamics in 2000. Then he read Masanobu Fukuoka and arrived at agricoltura sinergica, the synergistic method now used across the whole estate. The soil is never ploughed. No synthetic fertiliser or pesticide enters it. The rows are planted in companion patterns, so vines, grasses and legumes work as one ecosystem.

In 2010 the family built a new cellar in the Tafuri district, gravity fed and made entirely of tufa stone. Most of the wines mature there today. From 2013 they began recovering older Apulian grape varieties: Susumaniello, Marasco and Marchione. These joined the established Primitivo, Aglianico and Fiano vineyards. From 2015 the cellar pioneered sparkling wines made by the ancestral method, sold under the Susumante and Marasco labels.

In 2016 the estate joined Luca Gargano's Triple A catalogue (Agricoltori, Artigiani, Artisti). Membership means massal selection, harvest by hand, native yeasts only, no filtration or fining, and only minimal sulphur at bottling. The family team now spans two generations. Francesco Valentino and Anna Maria Passarelli work with their children Carlo Nazareno, Domenico, Andrea and Maria Clelia. Each of them holds a named role, from soil work to cellar to export.

Most of the wines carry the Salento or Puglia IGT label rather than DOCG. As is typical of Triple A producers, the estate prefers the freedom to make wine outside DOC rules. That freedom keeps the wine as close to the vineyard as possible. Reference bottles include Primitivo Mistico, the Aglianico, Fiano Salento and the orange Verdeca Sette Lune.
