Panevino

Panevino is Gianfranco Manca's tiny natural wine estate in Nurri, a hill town in central Sardinia. Manca was the town baker before he was a winemaker, and the name means bread and wine. His old bush vines, mostly Cannonau with dozens of other varieties mixed in, feed wines that change name with every vintage. The vines grow low on schist, iron-rich clay and sand. Nothing is added in the cellar, and the wine goes to bottle unfiltered. Production is tiny and reaches Britain through specialist importers.

About Panevino

Gianfranco Manca learned fermentation at the oven, not the press. He took over his uncle's bakery young, baking the classic Sardinian breads his mother and aunts taught him. The bakery's bread is still prized in Nurri. The family also held plots of old vines, half forgotten. Bread taught him how fermentation works, and the vines gave him somewhere to use it.

The vines grow low, in the traditional Sardinian bush shape, on schist, iron-rich clay and sand around Nurri. Most are Cannonau, but more than 30 other varieties grow mixed among them, and Manca added a parcel of Monica and Carignano del Sulcis. The estate covers just a handful of hectares, farmed organically, though he has never bothered with certification.

In the cellar he adds nothing, not even the usual pinch of preservative, and the wine goes to bottle unfiltered. He made wine from the mid 1980s but only put a label on it in 2005. Since then each wine has changed its name with every vintage, because each year tells a different story. The 2005 was called Perdacoddura, the 2006 Mariposa, and on it goes.

The wines carry no appellation. They are bottled as plain table wine by choice, which leaves Manca free to blend across his vines and rename as he likes. Production is tiny and reaches Britain through specialist importers, usually at thirty to forty pounds a bottle, and stock comes and goes fast. The two wines on this site, Storm Venti Venti, a pure Cannonau, and Axina 'e Ixinau, show the pattern. Each name may appear only once, but the vines behind them return every year.

What Panevino makes

Panevino's current bottle selection is easiest to understand through Cannonau.

Common questions

  • No. Panevino has no cellar door, no website and no visitor programme, by choice. The wines reach shops through a handful of specialist natural wine importers, so the way to taste them is to buy a bottle when one appears.
