Pasqualetti Viticoltori
Pasqualetti Viticoltori is a small family winery in Peccioli, a hill village in the Valdera about 40 km south-east of Pisa. The Pasqualetti family has made wine here since around 1970. Giuseppe Pasqualetti owns the estate. Laura Pasqualetti works the vines and the cellar and leads the tastings. The wines are built on Sangiovese: a Chianti DOCG, two Toscana IGT reds, a white and a sweet passito. Visitors walk the vineyard, see the cellar and taste three or five wines with bread and the estate's own olive oil.
Book a visitAbout Pasqualetti Viticoltori
Giuseppe Pasqualetti owns the estate and still drives the farm van himself when a customer orders a delivery. Laura Pasqualetti looks after the vines, works in the cellar and is the sommelier who meets visitors. The family has farmed this land for generations and began making wine around 1970. It is a small farm, and it sells direct from the cellar door on Via Risorgimento: bottles, loose wine, and 5 or 10 litre boxes.
Each winter the vines are cut back hard to one short cane with seven buds, so every plant carries a small crop. Picking day is decided by tasting the grapes, not only by the sugar readings. Everything is picked by hand into crates, and unripe berries are dropped in the row before the fruit goes straight to the cellar. The family's rule is to work with the natural balance of the place rather than against it.
Most of the grapes are local Tuscan varieties, Sangiovese above all. Chianti San Crispino is the family's DOCG wine: 90% Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Malvasia del Chianti. Celso and Scarlet are both IGT reds from Tuscany. Celso blends Sangiovese and Canaiolo with other local grapes for a rounder red. Scarlet is 90% Sangiovese with Colorino and Cabernet Sauvignon and spends three years in small Slavonian oak casks. Iris is the white, from Trebbiano Toscano and Chardonnay, and Nicchiaia is a sweet passito. The estate also presses its own extra virgin olive oil.
A visit follows the same path as the work. Laura walks guests through the vineyard beside the cellar and explains the grapes and how they are grown. Then comes the cellar, with each stage of winemaking and the equipment used. The tasting is three or five wines, served with plain bread and the estate's olive oil. The bread and oil are kept neutral on purpose, so nothing gets in the way of the wine. Tastings are booked ahead, through the experiences on this page or directly with the estate.
Peccioli sits in the Valdera, the hilly country between the provinces of Pisa and Livorno, with vineyards and olive groves around a stone-built old centre. Pisa airport is about 38 km away and Florence airport about 78 km. The nearest station is Pontedera, on the Pisa to Florence line, with a local bus on to the village.
