Malenchini Wine Estate
Malenchini Wine Estate sits at the Villa Medicea di Lilliano on the hills just south of Florence, in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini. The Malenchini family bought the villa in 1830 and still lives there. The eighth generation farms 18 hectares of organic vines, about 25 football pitches, and 12,000 olive trees. The wines are Chianti Colli Fiorentini, a Chianti Superiore and a rare pure Canaiolo. Five tours and tastings, from a cellar visit to a vineyard picnic, can be booked online. There are villas and suites to stay in.

About Malenchini Wine Estate
The villa began as a watchtower in the 11th century. The Medici bought it in 1646 as a farmhouse for their Lappeggi estate next door. In 1667 Grand Duke Cosimo III gave it to his brother, Cardinal Francesco Maria de' Medici. He turned it into a country house with fountains, lemon trees and a terrace that looks straight at Florence. In 1709 he held a ball there for the King of Denmark. He died two years later with no heirs, and his goods were sold. The Malenchini family bought the villa in 1830 and has been there ever since.
Today the eighth generation runs the estate, and Diletta Malenchini has been involved in the management for more than twenty years. The family has made wine here for about a century and farms organic, with certification from ICEA. The vineyards cover 18 hectares, around 25 football pitches, at about 250 metres above sea level on clay soils facing south. Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Pugnitello and Malvasia grow beside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Chardonnay. Around the vines stand 12,000 olive trees.
The Chianti Colli Fiorentini blends Sangiovese with Canaiolo and ages in medium-sized oak casks. The Riserva is made from the estate's best Sangiovese grapes and ages a long time in big Slavonian oak. Chianti Superiore adds Pugnitello, a native Tuscan grape. Bruzzico, a Toscana IGT, pairs Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon from vines more than twenty years old. The family is one of the few to bottle a pure Canaiolo, and it also makes a white, a rosé, a sparkling Chardonnay, a Vin Santo and two olive oils.
Visits start in the cellars under the villa and in the 17th-century oil store, where the oil still sits in terracotta jars. Five tours and tastings can be booked online. The simplest is a 90-minute cellar tour with three wines. Others add a Tuscan lunch, compare vintages of the top wines, lay out a picnic in the vineyard, or end with an olive-oil tasting. The estate also rents villas and suites on its land and hosts weddings and events. The shop by the villa is open Monday to Saturday.
