Tenuta Sette Ponti

Tenuta Sette Ponti sits in the Valdarno, in the hills between Florence and Arezzo. The Moretti Cuseri family has farmed here since the 1950s. Antonio Moretti Cuseri bottled the first wine in 1998, and the vines are farmed organically. Its most famous vineyard was planted in 1935 by a prince of the House of Savoy. Four of its wines are on sale in Britain, led by the red called Oreno. Visits run Monday to Saturday, by appointment, and most start in the vineyard.

About Tenuta Sette Ponti

Seven bridges cross the Arno on the old road between Florence and Arezzo, and the estate is named after them. One of them, the Buriano, is the bridge you can see over the shoulder of the Mona Lisa. The vines sit above the river, on slopes cooled by the air coming down off the Pratomagno ridge.

The oldest vineyard here was planted in 1935 by Prince Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta, who called it Vigna dell'Impero. It grows a Sangiovese vine found nowhere else. In the 1950s the architect Alberto Moretti Cuseri bought the first parcels of land from the prince's two daughters. His family has held them since. For decades the grapes were simply sold on to other producers.

Antonio Moretti Cuseri changed that. He had made his career in fashion, then took the farm on from his father and put the family name on a label. The first was Crognolo, from the 1998 harvest. Oreno, a Bordeaux blend, came a year later and made the estate's reputation. Antonio went on to plant in the Maremma, at Bolgheri, at Noto and on Etna. His son Amedeo joined the business in 2019 and now runs the winery.

The vines cover about 85 football pitches and have been organic since the early 2000s. The family feeds the soil with worm compost and manure from its own stables. It sprays with a machine that catches what the leaves do not take, saving nearly a third of the water. In the cellar the wine goes into steel, concrete, clay and oak, and is left to ferment on its own. The range starts with Vigna di Pallino, a Chianti also made as a Superiore. It ends with Vigna dell'Impero, pure Sangiovese off that 1935 plot, aged two years in big oak casks.

Visits run Monday to Saturday and have to be booked. Each one starts among the vines, carries on into the cellar and ends at a table, with focaccia, cheese and salumi beside the glasses. Yoga, a walk through the hills and a cooking class in the estate kitchen are all offered too, each finishing with the same three wines.
