Canneto is a certified organic wine estate on the western slopes of Montepulciano, in Tuscany. It sits close to the church of San Biagio, with the old hill town rising behind it. A group of Swiss friends bought the farm in 1987, after years of importing Montepulciano wine into Switzerland. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is its main wine. You can walk the vineyards, tour the cellar and taste the wines in a room with a terrace and wide views. A one-hour tour and tasting can be booked online.
Book a visitCanneto takes its name from the place where it stands, on the western slopes of Montepulciano. For generations the estate belonged to the Pilacci-Waldergan family. Its wines were already praised in 1933, in a book on typical Tuscan wines by V. Montanari and A. Musiani.
The present owners came to it through friendship and a love of wine. In the 1970s a group of Swiss friends began importing everyday Montepulciano wine into Switzerland. The trade soon grew, and they decided to try making wine of their own. In 1987 they set up a company in Zurich, Canneto AG, and bought the estate. They restored it with respect for the land and its traditions. The Vino Nobile consortium's profile of the estate still calls it the passion of a group of friends.
The farm covers 48 hectares, almost 120 acres, and nearly two thirds of it is vineyard. The vines grow 350 to 400 metres above the sea, on marl and gravel, and most of them face south-west. In winter they are pruned hard to keep the crop under the limits the rules allow. Since the 2017 harvest all of Canneto's wine and olive oil has been certified organic. The views have even drawn film crews. The estate was a location for the TV series Quantico and for a Dolce & Gabbana perfume advert.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is what the estate makes most: around 100,000 bottles in an average year. About 10,000 of them are Casina di Doro, made from a careful selection of Sangiovese from one vineyard. The main bottling is mostly Sangiovese, with a little Merlot and Cabernet. There is also a Riserva that keeps, and often improves, for at least ten years. Beside them come a Rosso di Montepulciano and Filippone, a red built on Sangiovese and Merlot. The whites are Calamus, a blend led by Malvasia, and the sweet Il Muffato. Its grapes are usually picked in December, once noble rot has set in.
In the cellar the grapes are sorted and fermented in steel tanks at no more than 26°C, for 15 to 20 days. The Vino Nobile then ages in oak, usually for at least two years, in large barrels from Slavonia and smaller French casks. After that it rests for at least six months in bottle. Visits begin in the ageing cellar. Daniela, who looks after guests, then leads a tasting in the new tasting room, which opens onto a terrace with wide views. Opened bottles are topped up with nitrogen, which keeps air away from the wine, so it stays fresh once the cork is out.

Azienda Agricola Canneto's current bottle selection is led by Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. The clearest grape signal comes from Sangiovese.
