Casanova della Spinetta

Casanova della Spinetta is the Tuscan winery of the Rivetti family, who also run La Spinetta in Piedmont. They founded the estate in 2001 at Terricciola, in the province of Pisa. The family chose Sangiovese on purpose, when most outside money in Tuscany went into international grapes. The vines grow Sangiovese on sandy hillside soils. The range covers Toscana IGT reds, a rosé, a Vermentino white and a Chianti Riserva DOCG. Il Nero di Casanova is the everyday red, and the single-vineyard Sezzana waits twelve years before release.

About Casanova della Spinetta

La Spinetta began in the early 1960s, on the Rivetti family farm at Castagnole delle Lanze. Three decades of single-cru Moscato, Barbera and Barbaresco made the family's name in Piedmont. In 2001 they took the same hands-on approach to a new territory. They bought vineyards at Terricciola, in the hills of the province of Pisa.

The family chose Sangiovese on purpose. At the time, most outside money in Tuscany went into international grape varieties. The estate sits at Localita Casanova, off the Strada Provinciale di Terricciola. Its sandy hillside soils, the family says, give a Piedmontese interpretation of Sangiovese.

Two historic plots stand at the top. The Sezzana vineyard gives a single-vineyard wine of the same name, made only in the best vintages. It spends twelve years in the cellar before release. Sassontino comes from another historic block with sandy soils.

The range runs to eight wines. Il Nero di Casanova is the everyday Sangiovese and the most exported bottle. Its name comes from vino nero, the old name for Tuscan reds. Il Gentile di Casanova and Il Colorino di Casanova are Toscana Rosso IGT blends. Chianti Riserva Casanova carries the DOCG label. A Toscana Vermentino IGT and Il Rose di Casanova complete the set.

The cellar at Localita Casanova is open by appointment, Monday to Saturday. Groups are capped at thirty-five people. Book through the Tuscan office on +39 0587 690 508, or by email at [email protected].
