Lamole di Lamole

Lamole di Lamole sits in the hamlet of Lamole, high above Greve in Chianti, between Florence and Siena. Its vineyards climb to 655 metres on old dry-stone terraces, at the upper limit for Sangiovese in Tuscany. The Marzotto family's Santa Margherita group, now Herita Marzotto Wine Estates, has owned it since 1993. It makes Chianti Classico at every level, from Duelame to two Gran Selezione wines, plus a Vinsanto. Visitors can book a tasting, a tour or a vineyard picnic, and the wine shop opens every day.

About Lamole di Lamole

Lamole is a hilltop hamlet above the Greve valley, a place of terraces, farmhouses and dry-stone walls. The estate took shape there just after the Second World War. The oldest label in its cellar to carry the Lamole di Lamole name is from 1966. Its historic cellar is far older: it dates from the mid-fourteenth century and was once part of the castle of Lamole. Today it holds the ageing casks and the Vinsantaia, the room where the Vinsanto matures. In 1993 the Santa Margherita group, owned by the Marzotto family, bought the estate as its first property in Tuscany. The group renamed itself Herita Marzotto Wine Estates in 2025 and still runs it.

The vines grow between 420 and 655 metres, and the highest plots sit at the upper limit for Sangiovese in Tuscany. Kilometres of dry-stone walls, built by hand over centuries, hold the terraces in place. They stop the soil washing downhill, bounce light onto the vines by day and give back their warmth at night. The soil is a pale ochre sandstone known as macigno toscano, mixed with flakes of galestro and hard white alberese. A conversion that began in 2005 has left the vineyards farmed on fully organic lines. That means no chemical products, compost made from the estate's own prunings and stalks, and plant tonics based on seaweed, aloe and propolis. In all the estate covers 288 hectares, about 400 football pitches, of which 37 are vines around Lamole.

Six main vineyards stand behind the wines, each with a name. Campolungo faces south-west and was planted, partly on terraces, between 1982 and 2009. It is the estate's signature site and gives its own Gran Selezione, first made in 1985. Grospoli, at 540 to 580 metres, is trained as alberello, the old bush-vine training of Lamole, and makes the second Gran Selezione. Le Masse is a single hectare at 607 to 655 metres. Il Prato, with bush vines from March 1945, and Ridaldi, whose white grapes go into the Vinsanto, complete the six. The Historic vineyard was planted on 20 March 1945: 110 vines, in which more than 30 different Sangiovese clones have been identified. It is one of the stops on the estate's tours.

The range is Chianti Classico DOCG at every level. Duelame, the entry wine, is pure Sangiovese from the two extremes of altitude, 420 and 655 metres, and ferments in steel. Maggiolo adds Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the Sangiovese and takes its name from the iris, which flowers across Lamole in May. Lareale, the Riserva, spends at least two years in casks. Vigneto di Campolungo and Vigna Grospoli are the two Gran Selezione wines, each from a single named vineyard. All five Chianti Classico wines list Gambero Rosso's top award, Tre Bicchieri, among their prizes. Beyond Chianti Classico there is Lam'Oro, a Toscana IGT blend aged in small oak barrels, and a Vinsanto del Chianti Classico DOC. Its grapes dry on mats from September to early January, and the wine then ages for at least three years in small oak and chestnut barrels.

Visits start in the Salotto di Lamole, the estate's reception room. They take in the modern winemaking cellar, the historic cellar with its large casks and small barrels, and the Vinsantaia. The visit ends with a tasting of wines from the group's Tuscan estates. The four set visits run from a 90-minute introduction to Chianti Classico to a private walk through the village with a welcome glass on the Campolungo terrace. From April to October there is also a vineyard picnic. All four can be booked online, and the wine shop is open every day from 10am to 6pm.
