About Azienda Vitivinicola Pieropan Leonildo

The Pieropan family has made wine in the Soave hills since 1880, with the Calvarino vineyard purchased in 1901 anchoring the estate as it stands today. Andrea and Dario Pieropan, the fourth generation, run the cellar from the historic Palazzo Pullici on Via Giulio Camuzzoni, taking over after their father Leonildo "Nino" Pieropan died in 2018.

The estate covers around 40 hectares across the basalt and limestone hills of the Soave Classico DOC zone, planted predominantly to Garganega with the older indigenous Trebbiano di Soave on the volcanic slopes. Each cru sits on a distinct soil: Calvarino is on Eocene basalt at 95 to 145 metres, while La Rocca rolls across south-facing limestone clay at 150 metres above sea level.

Pieropan rewrote what Soave Classico DOC could be. Calvarino, first bottled in 1971, was the first single-vineyard Soave on the market, blending Garganega 70% with Trebbiano di Soave 30% and ageing in glass-lined concrete tulip tanks for 12 to 15 months on fine lees. La Rocca, released from the 1978 vintage, was the first Soave aged in wood, with 12 to 15 months in French oak tonneaux and Slavonian botti giving the 100% Garganega its breadth and longevity.

Conversion to organic farming began in 2008, with chemical weeding eliminated as early as 2002, and EU organic certification has been in place from the 2015 vintage. Leonildo Pieropan was a co-founder of FIVI, the Federation of Italian Independent Winegrowers, in 2008, and the estate sits firmly in that grower-bottler tradition.

A second estate at Tregnago, in the Valpolicella DOC, extends the family work into Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella for the Monte Garzon reds. Villa Cipolla, set in the same Valpolicella hills, operates as the Pieropan Wine Relais. Cellar visits, tastings and tours run from the Soave estate by appointment, with private experiences also bookable at Villa Cipolla.
