Azienda Vitivinicola Pieropan Leonildo

Pieropan farms around 40 hectares of vines, about 56 football pitches, in the hills of Soave Classico. The cellar stands in Soave town, east of Verona. In 1971 the family released Calvarino, the first Soave from a single named vineyard. Four generations on, the estate is still a benchmark for whites led by the Garganega grape. Brothers Andrea and Dario Pieropan run it today, and the wines have been certified organic since the 2015 vintage. Cellar visits run by appointment, and guests can stay at Villa Cipolla in Valpolicella.

About Azienda Vitivinicola Pieropan Leonildo

The Pieropan family has made wine in the Soave hills since 1880. They bought the Calvarino vineyard in 1901, and it still anchors the estate. Brothers Andrea and Dario Pieropan, the fourth generation, run the cellar from the old Palazzo Pullici on Via Giulio Camuzzoni. They took over after their father, Leonildo "Nino" Pieropan, died in 2018.

The vines spread across the basalt and limestone hills of the Soave Classico zone. Most of the land carries Garganega. The older native white, Trebbiano di Soave, grows on the volcanic slopes. The two named vineyards sit on different ground. Calvarino lies on dark volcanic rock at 95 to 145 metres. La Rocca rolls across pale, south-facing limestone and clay at 150 metres.

Pieropan changed what Soave could be. Calvarino, first bottled in 1971, was the first single-vineyard Soave on sale. It blends 70% Garganega with 30% Trebbiano di Soave. The wine spends 12 to 15 months in tulip-shaped concrete tanks, resting on its fine lees. La Rocca followed from the 1978 vintage as the first Soave aged in wood. Pure Garganega, it spends 12 to 15 months in casks of French and Slavonian oak, which give it breadth and staying power.

The move to organic farming started in 2008, and chemical weedkillers had already gone by 2002. The wines carry EU organic certification from the 2015 vintage. Leonildo helped found FIVI, the Italian federation of independent winegrowers, in 2008. The estate still works in that tradition: growers who bottle their own wine.

A second estate at Tregnago reaches into the Valpolicella DOC. There the family grows Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella for the Monte Garzon reds. Villa Cipolla, in the same hills, runs as the Pieropan Wine Relais, where guests can stay. Cellar visits, tastings and tours run from the Soave estate by appointment. Private experiences can also be booked at Villa Cipolla.
